UK visa defaulters to get 10-year ban

THE UK government has introduced a ten-year ban on visa application defaulters, the Political and Press Secretary of the British High Commission in Tanzania Mr John Bradshaw told reporters today.
Mr Bradshaw said the penalty becomes effective from this month and could be imposed on those who worked or went to the UK illegally, overstayed for more than 28 days after the expiry date of their legitimate visas or used deception in a visa or other application.
From April 1, anyone who has previously broken our immigration laws could be banned from going to the UK for up to ten years, said Mr Bradshaw, adding that the new development was good news for the majority of travellers.
He said by quickly identifying who the high-risk applicants were, the UK government could also be able to quickly identify and welcome legitimate travellers. He also said there was no more same-day service, noting that due to the need for enhanced security checks, visas could only be issued the next working day after documents were submitted at the High Commission.
Previously it was possible to offer same-day service. This is because all security checks will now be centralised in the UK, Mr Bradshaw observed. The diplomat appealed to Tanzanians and other potential visa applicants to apply early, at least three weeks before the travel date and suggested online application as the quickest method.
To save both time and money, he encouraged long time visa that costs 512,500/- for five or ten years rather than a six month multiple-entry visa which costs 162,500/-. He said in the past two years, only twelve per cent of 562,566 visa applications from world-wide were refused visa and emphasised that Tanzania recorded very low number of refusals.
