As Members of Parliament (MPs) and opposition leaders have become synonymous for sleeping in the chamber during critical times, it looks the disease has not spared even the leadership of the National Assembly.

Speaker Richard Msowoya was beamed live on television on Monday, in his own dreamland when President Arthur Peter Mutharika attended the global, World Environment Day commemorations at the Bingu International Convention Center on Monday.

Even the salutations of the country’s President mentioning the name and title of the Speaker at the beginning of his speech could not do enough to wake up the head of the country’s Legislature who was by this time in his own world.

Despite being a live event on television and radio on the public broadcaster and other private media, Richard Msowoya took his time and the event to snore away.

Msowoya was deputy President for the main opposition, the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) whose leader Lazarous Chakwera deserted Parliament in session to go on a merry making trip in Nairobi, Kenya.

Just over a week a go during the presentation of the all important National Budget, leader of the opposition People’s Party Uladi Mussa was beamed live on television sleeping on many occasions.

This was happening a day after he was also caught sleeping when fellow opposition MP, Lucius Banda was making a contribution to the President’s State of the Nation address.

With sleeping opposition leaders like this, it is not known how Malawians will take them seriously as an alternative because of their desire to enjoy sleep at critical times when issues of national importance are being discussed.
