Malawi's Eland Coal Mining has signed a contract to export coal to multinational cement producer Lafarge's plant in Tanzania.
CEO Graham Smith says the deal will see the company, which mines the energy mineral at Mabulambo, in northern Malawi, initially exporting 10 000 t before the end of the year.
"Lafarge has committed a 10 000-t coal export order, with the possibility of a further 10 000 t," says Smith.
Eland last year commissioned a washing plant, which produces 30 t of clean coal an hour – enough to meet local and regional demand.
Meanwhile, Eland Coal is undertaking exploration in its Mabulambo licence area to increase the resource. "Eland's goal is to become a dominant supplier of coal in Malawi and East and Southern African countries. We are now focusing on identifying a coal resource suit- able for a 300-MW power station," says Smith.
Eland Coal Mining is a subsidiary of Allied Procurement Agency (APA), a consortium of investors also prospecting for heavy mineral sands at Chipoka, in the southern lakeshore area.
