Kutoka kushoto kwenda kulia ni Abdulaziz Twala (Msaidizi Waziri katika Ofisi ya Rais), Aboud Jumbe (Waziri wa Siha na Majumba), Hasnu Makame (Waziri wa Fedha na Maendeleo), Othman Shariff (Waziri wa Elimu na Mila), Abdulrahman Babu (Waziri wa Mambo ya Nje na Biashara), Abeid Karume (Rais wa Jamhuri ya Watu wa Zanzibar), Abdallah Kassim Hanga (Makamu wa Rais), Saleh Saadalla (Waziri wa Kilimo), Idris Abdul Wakil (Waziri wa Kazi, Njia na Nguvu za Umeme) na Hassan Nassor Moyo (Msaidizi Waziri wa Kazi, Njia na Nguvu za Umeme).

Tunao wanahistoria wengi makini wanaoweza kueleza mambo haya kinaganaga kuliko tunavyofanya katika makala za magazetini, lakini ama hawajapata jukwaa au hawako tayari kufanya hivyo. Namuunga mkono Issa bin Nasser kwa aliyosema katika kitabu chake, ‘Zanzibar: Kinyang’anyiro na Utumwa’. Aliandika: “Mwenyezi Mungu ndiye mjuaji wa yote.” Sentensi inayotangulia maneno hayo, ambayo ndiyo imenikopesha maneno ya kichwa cha habari ya mada hii, inatia uchungu hata zaidi inaposomeka hivi: “…Mwenyezi Mungu mwenyewe anaelewa namna ya kuihukumu dhuluma hii iliyotendeka…”

Naiandika mada hii kwa ufupi sana kutokana na ufinyu wa nafasi. Kassim Hanga alikuwa rafiki mkubwa wa kisiasa wa Oscar Kambona. Kama Kambona alivyopoteza nyadhifa zake katika siasa, ndivyo Hanga naye alipoteza nyadhifa zake katika Serikali ya Muungano wakati yalipofanyika mabadiliko makubwa ya Baraza la Mawaziri. Hanga hakujua mambo mengi kuhusu Tanzania kama Kambona alivyojua. Baada ya kwenda Guinea, Hanga alihakikishiwa na Rais wa nchi hiyo, Ahmed Sekou Toure, na Nyerere wa Tanzania, kwamba angekuwa huru na salama akirejea nchini. Hanga alirejeshwa Tanzania kutoka Guinea.

Hanga hakuuona uhuru alioahidiwa na, badala yake, Desemba 1967 alikamatwa kwa tuhuma za uhaini. Alipohoji sababu ya kukamatwa alijibiwa kuwa alikula njama za kuwarubuni maofisa wa jeshi ili aweze kuiangusha serikali ya Sheikh Abeid Karume. Katika mahojiano aliyoruhusiwa kufanyiwa akiwa rumande, kwa mujibu wa jarida Africa Confidential, Hanga alikana kuhusika kwa vyovyote katika kula njama na maofisa wa jeshi na akasisitiza kwamba siku zote jitihada zake zilikuwa ni katika kutaka kuwapatanisha Kambona na Nyerere.

Mapema mwaka 1969, Kassim Hanga aliachiwa huru kutoka rumande. Badala ya kurejea Zanzibar, aliondoka na kwenda kuishi katika mojawapo ya nyumba zilizomilikiwa na Kambona mjini Dar es Salaam ambayo ilikuwa bado kutaifishwa. Lakini matatizo yake na serikali za Tanganyika na Zanzibar hayakuwa yamemalizika. Kuna Watanzania ambao hawakuridhishwa na hali ya kisiasa nchini. Miongoni mwa mengi waliyohoji ni suala la Kassim Hanga na ‘udikteta wa Zanzibar’ wakidai kuwa Karume hakutaka uchaguzi kufanyika Zanzibar.

Baada ya kupinga sana sera za serikali, Oktoba 1968, wabunge kadhaa walitimuliwa Bungeni na baadhi ya watu wengine wakakamatwa na kutiwa kizuizini. Hawa walikuwa ni pamoja na Eli Anangisye, Joseph Kasella-Bantu, Christopher Kassanga Tumbo, Ndugu Choga, Ndugu Bakampenja na Ndugu Kaneno. Taarifa za watu kutiwa kizuizini zilipochapishwa katika gazeti Daily Nation (Okt. 2, 1968) la Kenya, serikali ya Tanzania iliamuru kukamatwa kwa mwandishi wa Kitanzania aliyevujisha habari hizo, Melek Mzirai Kangero.

Baadaye ikajulikana kuwa Hanga na Othman Sharif walikamatwa mjini Dar es Salaam kutokana na shinikizo la Karume aliyewataka watu hao kwa gharama zozote—hata kama ni kwa kuuvunja Muungano. Othman Sharif, msomi kutoka Chuo cha Makerere, alikuwa mmoja wa waasisi wa Afro-Shirazi na kiongozi wa chama Bungeni wakati Karume akishikilia Urais wa chama. Mara baada ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar, kwa kudhani kuwa Othman alikuwa na tamaa ya mamlaka ya kisiasa na uwezekano wake wa kula njama za kuiangusha serikali yake, akisaidiwa na Nyerere, Karume alimwondosha Othman Unguja na kufanywa kuwa Balozi.

Kwanza alikuwa Balozi wa Tanzania mjini London, Uigereza, kisha akapelekwa Washington, Marekani. Wakati mmoja, inadaiwa, Othman Sharif aliporudi Zanzibar kwa matembezi aliponyoka kuingia katika kucha za Abeid Karume. Karume alianza kumwandama kama simba anavyoandama windo lake. Kuona hivyo, Nyerere aliingilia kati mara hiyo hiyo akidai kwamba Othman Sharif alikuwa Balozi wa Muungano wa Tanzania, na si Balozi wa Zanzibar. Baada ya kupoteza wadhifa wa Ubalozi wa Tanzania nchini Marekani, Mwalimu Nyerere alimpatia Othman kazi nyingine kwa kumteua kuwa afisa uganga wa mifugo mkoani Iringa. Lakini hiyo haikumzuia Karume kumwandama hadi mkoani Iringa na, kwa mujibu wa kitabu ‘Conflict and Harmony in Zanzibar’, Karume aliwashawishi Wazanzibari watatu waliokuwa marafiki wa karibu sana wa Othman ili wamsaliti.

Watu hao walikubali. Wakafikishwa mbele ya Baraza la Mapinduzi, wakatoa ushahidi kwa kiapo na kudai kwamba ni kweli Othman Sharif alikula njama za kutaka kuiangusha serikali ya Karume. Watu hao walipelekwa kwa Nyerere na kurudia madai hayo hayo. Wakati Nyerere anaelekea kuuamini huo ‘mchezo wa kuigiza’, tayari uhusiano kati yake na Karume ulianza kuingiwa na dosari nyingine. Muungano wa Tanganyika-Zanzibar ulikuwa majaribuni.

Hatimaye Nyerere akasema watu hao watapokea “hukumu ya haki” Zanzibar. Gazeti Ulimwengu (Nov. 19, 1967) katika tahariri yake liliandika kuwa lazima hukumu ya haki itolewe. Kisha likaonyesha kupinga suala la watu kuwekwa kizuizini. Kama matokeo, mhariri wa gazeti hilo, Otini Kambona, alikamatwa. Hata ndugu yake Otini, aliyeitwa Mathias, naye alikamatwa kwa sababu nyingine tofauti kwa madai ya kushiriki katika njama za kuiangusha Serikali.

Kikundi cha viongozi kutoka mkoani Iringa, ambako Sheikh Sharrif alikuwa akifanya kazi, walimsihi sana Nyerere asiruhusu watu hao wapelekwe Zanzibar kwani walijua hatima yao. Jawabu la Nyerere lilikuwa hivi: “…Hili si jambo la ubishi kwa sababu halina uzito wa kubishaniwa. Lakini kama kutakuwa salama, ni vizuri tukajua watu hawa watakuwa salama kiasi gani.” Lakini historia ni shahidi. Hakukuwa na usalama wa kiasi chochote. Wanadamu hawa walinyang’anywa haki yao ya kuishi.

Baada ya kuona kuwa mambo yameshindikana, na kwa kuwa Muungano wa Tanzania ndilo lililokuwa suala kuu katika akili yake, Mwalimu ‘alibwaga manyanga’. Septemba 1969 Nyerere akajikuta akiwapa idhini maofisa wake kuwatoa Kassim Hanga na Othman Sharif wakabidhiwe SMZ kama Abeid Karume alivyotaka. Walipelekwa Uwanja wa Kimataifa wa Ndege wa Dar es Salaam (DIA), wakipewa maneno ya kuwafariji, na kisha wakasafirishwa kwenda Zanzibar. Hiyo ikawa ndiyo safari yao ya mwisho—angalau safari ya mwisho kutoka Dar es Salaam—tena, inadaiwa, wakiwa na wamefungwa pingu.

Huko ndiko walikokutana na mauti yao, pengine kwa kupigwa risasi—ingawa taarifa nyingine zilisema kuwa waliuawa kwa kuzamishwa katika maji. Lakini, kinasema kitabu ‘Conflict and Harmony in Zanzibar’, hata wale waliomsaliti Othman Sharif nao waliuawa mmoja baada ya mwingine. Machapisho mengine ya kihistoria yanaunga mkono madai hayo. Katika hotuba aliyoitoa Oktoba 1969, ukiwa ni mwezi mmoja baada ya kufanyika kwa mauaji hayo, Abeid Karume alitangaza kuwa watu wanne waliokuwa wakila njama za kuiangusha serikali yake “…wameuawa kwa kupigwa risasi.” Hili alilikiri mwenyewe.

Vyanzo kadhaa vinasema kuwa Kassim Hanga, na aliyekuwa Waziri wa Elimu na Balozi wa Tanzania nchini Marekani, Sheikh Othman Sharrif, waliuawa Zanzibar na utawala wa Karume. Hata hivyo mauaji hayo hayakuwa mwisho wa mambo. Inaelekea kuanzia hapo, au kabla ya hapo, kulijengeka utamaduni wa kuwakamata watu, kuwaweka kizuizini na hatimaye wengine kuuawa.

Zaidi ya watu kuwekwa kizuizini bila kufunguliwa mashitaka, kulikuwa na madai ya kuweko kwa zile kambi za mateso. Kwa mfano katika miaka ya 1960 na mwanzoni mwa 1970, inasemwa, Zanzibar kulikuwa na ile kambi iliyoitwa ‘Kwa Bamkwe’ au ‘Kwa Mandera’. Mkoani Mwanza kaskazini mwa Tanzania kulikuwa na (kambi ya) Kigoto. Hiyo ni moja ya kambi zilizokuwa mbaya. Baada ya kuwakamata watu kwa tuhuma za uchawi mwaka 1977 katika maeneo ya Mwanza na Shinyanga, ikijumlishwa na matendo waliyofanyiwa watu hao, ilitosha kumfanya Alhaj Ali Hassan Mwinyi kujiuzulu ‘kwa kuwajibika’.

Ingawa wengi walitarajia kuwa kuwajibika huko kungekuwa ndio mwisho wa Mwinyi katika siasa, Nyerere ‘alimpigia debe’ kuwa Rais wa Zanzibar (Jan. 30, 1984—Okt. 24, 1985) na hatimaye Rais wa Tanzania (Nov. 5, 1985—Nov. 23, 1995) kwa kura za NDIYO. Kwa mujibu wa kitabu ‘Zanzibar: Kinyang’anyiro na Utumwa’, mwanasiasa aliyekuwa Unguja wakati mambo yote hayo yakitokea, Issa bin Nasser Al-Ismaily, anaandika kuwa mwaka 1970 Wazanzibari tisa “walitiwa nguvuni na Serikali ya ASP kwa kisingizio cha kutaka kuipindua serikali hiyo.” Wazanzibari hao ni Salim Ahmed Busaidi, Abdallah Suleiman Riyami, Othman Soud, Aziz Bualy, Hemed Said, Muhammed Juma, Muhammed Hamza, Musa Ali na Said Hamoud.

Bila ya kufikishwa mahakamani, Karume aliwahukumu kutupwa gerezani na kupewa kazi ya kuchunga ng’ombe katika uwanda wa “Hanyagwa-Mchana”. Baada ya kifo cha Karume Aprili 1972, “wananchi hao waliuawa wakati wa utawala wa mrithi wa Karume, Aboud Jumbe.” Kitabu hicho kinaomboleza hivi: “…Mwenyezi Mungu mwenyewe anaelewa namna ya kuihukumu dhuluma hii iliyotendeka…; kwani Mwenyezi Mungu ndiye mjuaji wa yote.” Ni kweli kwamba “Mwenyezi Mungu ndiye mjuaji wa yote” kwa sababu hakuna mwanadamu atakayejua yote yaliyotendeka, hasa yale ambayo hayatajulikana kamwe.

Kuwa Hanga ndiye aliyekuwa kinara wa Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar hili si jambo lenye utata tena. Ikiwa hivyo ndivyo Hanga hatoweza kuutua mzigo wa roho zilizopotea katika mapinduzi hayo. Ikiwa Hanga atalaumiwa kwa vifo vya maelfu ya Wazanzibari nani alaumiwe kwa umauti uliomfika Hanga tena kwa kuuliwa kishenzi kwani hapana neno zaidi ya hilo linaloweza kutosheleza kuelezea jinsi Hanga alivyouliwa. Kichekesho kikubwa ni kuwa wale waliopoteza roho kwa hiyo kutangulia mbele ya haki, yao yalikuwa yamekwisha. Lakini kwa wale wajane na mayatima waliobakia nyuma wakihangaika, kifo cha Hanga na wenzake katika wale waliofanikisha mapinduzi kuuliwa kwao kulikuwa muujuza wa aina yake, uchawi usioelezeka nani fundi wake. Ilikuwa vigumu kueleza. Ingeeleweka vyema endapo kisasi cha kuitoa roho ya Hanga kingetimizwa kutoka katika mikono ya maadui zake waliopinduliwa. Haikuwa hivyo.

Wale wajane na mayatima walililipiziwa kisasi na watu waliokuwa maadui wakubwa wa waume na baba zao waliopinduliwa. Vipi Hanga kiongozi mkuu wa mapinduzi aje kuwa adui wa mapinduzi yenyewe kiasi cha kuwa hukumu ya kumtosheleza haikuwa kifo tu bali kifo cha kishenzi. Fikra ya Hanga ilikuwaje alipokuwa peke yake ndani ya selo Ukonga Prison…usiku ukimpita bila ya hata lepe la usingizi akiwaza yanayomkabili.

Nini kilikuwa kikipitika katika ubongo wake wakati wauaji wake walipomtoa katika selo yake na yeye akawakabili ilhali aikijua kuwa walikuwa wamekuja kuitoa roho yake. Fikra yake ilikwenda wapi? Ilikwenda kwa Sultan Jamshid bin Abdullah aliyempindua na kwa Masultani wengi waliopita ambao wameiaga dunia mikono yao ikiwa haina damu au kwa Abeid Amani Karume aliyeingia madarakani kwa mapanga ya Wamakonde kutoka Tanganyika, wakata mkonge kutoka Tanganyika wakifanya kazi mashamba ya Sakura na Kipumbwi? Fikra ya Hanga ilielekea wapi? Kwa Nyerere aliyemsaliti?

Hakika ni wazi hakutegemea mapinduzi aliyoyasisi yangemgeukia na kuwa sababu ya yeye kutolewa roho kwa kuuliwa kishenzi. Jambo la kusikitisha ni kuwa hadi pale alipokamatwa na kuwekwa jela Ukonga na kufikishwa mbele ya mkutano wa hadhara na kuadhiriwa na Julius Nyerere tayari alikuwa keshapoteza kila kitu achilia mbali dira ya mapinduzi aliyokusudia ingeongoza Zanzibar. Hanga hakuwa kamwe na uwezo wa kumfanya Karume lolote kwani Karume tayari alikuwa chini ya mbawa za Nyerere ngome ambayo Hanga asingeweza kuitikisa achalia mbali kuibomoa. Muungano baina ya Tanganyika na Zanzibar ilikuwa hirizi tosha ya kumkinga Karume.

Katika mkasa wa kuuliwa kwa Hanga ndipo msemaji mmoja akasema, “Maiti toka makaburini mwao walionyesha ujuzi wa kufanya miujiza na uchawi wao kwani laiti kifo cha Hanga kingesababishwa na wale waliopinduliwa kisasi chake kingekuwa cha kutisha. Ilibidi Hanga kwa miujiza ya maiti zile auliwe na wale wale aliowaweka madarakani watu ambao hapakuwepo na sababu ya wao kumuona adui. Halikudondoka chozi kwa kifo cha Hanga. Kila aliyepata mnong’ono wa kuuliwa kwake alikuwa kimya kama vile ile taarifa ile ya kifo haimuhusu.

In 1969 after the trial of fourteen who were accused of coup planing by Karume followed by the execution of four defendants. Two of this are the First Vice President Hanga and the Ambassador to United States Mr Othman sheriff , no record of the trial proceeding no details of the court proceeding no composition of proceeding or evidence have ever been provided and the Tanzania Government had to date been unable or unwilling to provide the details to the family of the this individuals if were executed.

President Julius Nyerere was pictured on January 16th when he addressed an open air rally where the detained former Tanzania Minister and Vice-President of Zanzibar was brought to face the people. Karume did not like people who were educated; he did not trust them, so most of those from the ASP who were imprisoned were educated, like Othman Shariff. Shariff and Karume were rivals within the ASP before independence; after the revolution, Shariff was first appointed minister of education and then Tanzania's ambassador to the United States. It is said that, on a visit to Tanzania, he was seen taking photographs of the State House, and that was enough for the RC to accuse him of being an imperialist stooge and a CIA spy trying to help the Americans take over.

The authorities arrested him but released him after Nyerere intervened. He was reduced to serving as a veterinary officer in Iringa on the mainland. Later, some members of the RC were sent to arrest him and bring him back to Zanzibar, but Nyerere intervened again. They eventually convinced Nyerere to hand Shariff over, and once he arrived in Zanzibar, that was the end of him.

Abdallah Kassim Hanga was Russian-educated and very popular among younger ASP members. After the revolution, he was named vice president but, after the union, was transferred to Dar es Salaam. Hanga eventually lost favor with Nyerere because he was very close to Kambona, Nyerere's minister of foreign affairs and defense. During the Tanganyikan army mutiny of 1964, it was Kambona who went to talk with the soldiers, while Nyerere remained in hiding.After Kambona fell out with Nyerere and went into exile, Hanga lost favor, because he was so close to Kambona. After Hanga was removed from the cabinet, he went to live in Conakry, Guinea, because he had married a Guinean woman.

After some time, Nyerere sent a delegation to President Sekou Toure, asking him to convince Hanga to come back to Tanzania, where he would be safe. Unfortunately, when he returned, he was arrested and publicly humiliated. At a rally at Mnazi Mmoja in Dar es Salaam, Nyerere had Hanga brought there in handcuffs. Nyerere publicly insulted him and then later agreed to send him to Zanzibar, where Hanga was tortured and killed.

Yelena Khanga, also known as Elena Hanga, was born on 1 May 1962 and raised in Moscow USSR and came to the United States in 1990 to write (with Susan Jacoby) Soul to Soul: The Story of a Black Russian American Family: 1865-1992.

Yelena Khanga was born in Moscow in 1962. Her father was bitterly disappointed that she was not a son, and did not even pick up his wife and daughter at the hospital. When he returned to Africa a few months later, Lily declined to follow. Like her own parents, although for different reasons, Lily Khanga did not want her daughter to be raised in a land that could not accord her a semblance of equality. In 1965, Abdullah Khanga was murdered by political opponents.

Thus Ms. Khanga grew up in a three-generation female household, a situation not uncommon, she notes, either in black America or in Russia, where divorce is prevalent and child raising a female duty. She was brought up to take pride in her black heritage and to rely on her own talents. She studied journalism at Moscow State University and worked for a time as a singer at the Cosmos Hotel (where she was billed as "Lolita from America"). In 1984 she landed a job at Moscow News, shortly before glasnost transformed it from a dull party organ into a muckraking journal exposing the underside of Soviet life.

Hizo historia tulikuwa hatufundishwi mashuleni. Nimesoma history mpaka A Level, lakini hakufundishwa kuhusu Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar na wasisi wake. Tulikuwa tunafundishwa zaidi kuhusu uhuru wa Tanganyika.

Ukicheki hata past exams papers, nadra kukuta swali kuhusu mapinduzi ya Zanzibar, maybe just in case, mtu asije akafunguka huko wakati anashuka mapoints. Labda historia ya Mapinduzi ya Zanzibar iliachwa kufundishwa kwenye somo husika ili tujifanyie "homework" wenyewe?

Haya si mara yangu ya kwanza kuyasikia. Haya yanafumbua macho ya watu wengi na hivyo kuelewa hotuba ya Lissu bungeni juzi vizuri zaidi. Halafu aje mtu hapa atwambie Karume aliuawa na wapinga mapinduzi. Upuuzi mtupu, aliuawa kama njia ya kulipiza kisasi kwa aliowaua yeye. Kuna mahali niliwahi kusoma kwamba Hanga alizikwa hakiwa hai.

Mauwaji ya 1964 ndio adui mkubwa wa wana mapinduzi wote wa znz na nje ya znz.ukiangalia mauwaji yale ya watu wasio na hatia huwezi amini kama m/zimungu ataweza kuwapa kile walicho tegemea wauwaji.na ndio ilivyo tokea wauwaji wote duniani mwisho wake huuwana wenyewe kwa wenyewe.
