Over 100 truck drivers on transit have been denied entry into Tanzania through the Kenyan border. Reason for this has not been said despite the fact that the one hundred plus drivers have been tested for COVID-19 and test results came back negative
“We have all been found without the Coronavirus and even have our test certificate that should allow us passage. But still the Tanzanian’s authorities at the border control have refused to let us drive through and deliver our cargo.” One Ali Oman lamented to the journalist
Despite having a valid COVID-19 pass from the Kenyan ministry of health, there still was no through way for these exhausted drivers. After staying at the border for close to a week with very poor living conditions like uncomfortable sleeping conditions, lack of some quality food, still they are denied entry. With some of them carrying very perishable products, they pleaded with the Tanzanian authorities to cross check their results or better yet, conduct another test on them if they are in doubt but all that fell on deaf ears
They are now left wondering why this could be happening yet the two East African States; Tanzania and Kenya have been on the verge of reconciling through the two leaders, Presidents John Pombe Magufuli and his Kenyan counterpart President Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta.
It is a matter of question whether the two leaders really ended their confrontations following disagreements on how to handle the pandemic in their own countries or not. Was it just a charade for the media when things on the ground are very different? This goes unanswered as drivers remain stranded with goods at the Kenyan-Tanzania border.
What are the authorities both from Kenya and Tanzania doing? “Nobody knows…”, according to one Henry Ochieng who is also a conductor in one of the trucks transporting petroleum. It is yet to be established whether authorities from both sides are really not willing to work together to beat the COVID-19 pandemic or are ready to put their differences aside with relation to counter approaches to the pandemic.
Meanwhile the situation is almost the same at the Kenya Uganda border where drivers have been experiencing unworthy treatment from the medical teams there. They protested for delayed results which have caused them a lot. The situation is not different since they cannot access good sleeping conditions like hotels since residents fear them that they must be positive. Also, they have resorted to cooking for themselves on the roadside since there are no hotels that are willing to open and operate.
Business in the border towns is not as usual. A lot closed down and remain that way ever since the Pandemic hit the country and thus the towns at the borders have been experiencing huge economic loss. The health ministry has been asked to fast track the testing processes to reduce on congestion at the border points to allow easy entry and exit of trucks into and out of the country.
