Lufthansa Group and Swiss International Air Lines (Swiss) have announced additional flights to Nairobi. Lufthansa will add a sixth flight to Nairobi from June 21 while Swiss will also increases operations to six weekly flights from tomorrow. With the higher frequencies, Lufthansa total weekly flights will rise to 12. Lufthansa’s flights to and from Nairobi will carry its Star Alliance partner United Airline’s code.

State denies Emirates third daily flight to Nairobi

The Ministry of Transport has withdrawn commercial rights for Emirates Airlines to operate a third daily flight to Kenya, in what is seen as a plan to negotiate for a fair share of routes in favour of Kenya Airways.

The government intends to review the existing Bilateral Air Service Agreement with the United Arabs Emirates "to ensure parity in the exercise of rights granted by the Air Service Agreement".

Transport Principal Secretary Irungu Nyakera, in a letter dated January 20, 2017, told Emirates Airlines executive secretary in Nairobi Carolyne Kyule that the decision was reached after an informal discussion between the aeronautical authorities of Kenya and the UAE.

"In this regard, the republic of Kenya is unable to grant a third daily passenger frequency to Emirates Airline before the review," Nyakera says in the letter.

The third daily flight from Dubai to Nairobi was set to begin on June 1, 2017, which could have increased the number of its flights between the two cities to 21 a week.

"Our earlier approval for flight EK 717/718 is subsequently withdrawn," the letter copied to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and the Kenya Airports Authority management reads in part.

“I believe the bilateral air service agreement is aimed at ensuring we have a more equitable share of routes. Anyway ours is just to implement what the government has said,” Kenya Civil Aviation Authority Director General Gilbert Kibe told the Star.

I know your fighting on Kenya's corner, lakini explain to us why European airline wanakubaluwa kuongeza safari na sio Emirates. Hii ni double standard au??

Hii ni biashara bana, lazma uvutie kwako kama una nguvu, usijali, when ATCL has like at least 10 Boeing 700 and above flying different continents, then you will start to understand the power and diplomacy that comes with it...

KQ is a strategic asset! Anyway, KQ flies to all those destinations, that those airlines come from, before they are allowed to increase flights they negotiate deals that makes sure both airlines benefit...
Emirates was hurting KQ but KQ couldn't do anything because they had already agreed the terms, but when Emirates decided to increase flights, that was the perfect opportunity for KQ through KCAA to renegociate with with Emirates since at that particular point Kenya had the upper hand... KQ flies 26 flights to dubai a week, ask yourself, why hasn't UAE or emirates reduce the flights for KQ to Dubai? Its just business, its all about give and take...


BTW, what do you have to say about ATCL ordering CS300 jets to be used for regional routes like Kampala and Nairobi?? I remember one time we were arguing about KQ use of embraer jets , and you were saying turbo planes like Q400 were 'economical' . Vipi tena? Flying withing EA and central is still short haul

Haha my good old friend unefufuka good to see you. Well CS300 is mid-range aircraft kama Boeing 737 or Airbus A319/320. Sio kweli kama that CS300 ita pelekwa Kenya na Uganda permanently, kama kuna abiria wengi yes they can send it there but it will be more to the 3hr journey kama Johannesburg, Capetown, Maldive or Seychelles etc. Q400 is still a king to those 1.5hr trip hata Jambojet imeweka Q400 on her fleets. Still no one can beat Q400 on fuel consumption and capacity.
