I stand to be corrected.)

Volvo to start assembling trucks in Kenya

Swedish truck maker AB Volvo is to start assembling vehicles in Kenya, part of a series of investments aimed at boosting the company's presence in the region, the company said on Thursday.

Volvo is only the latest vehicle maker to announce plans in recent months to start assembling locally, following moves by Volkswagen, PSA Peugeot and CNH Industrial's Iveco.

The company said it was partnering with local firm NECST in the plan, which will create about 300 direct jobs.

"There is a significant potential for the premium truck business as regional economies grow, infrastructure investments expand and the business environment remains investment friendly," Claes Nilsson, president of Volvo Trucks, said in the statement.

Boeing opens Nairobi and SA offices with eye on Africa deals

    By BRIAN NGUGI

    Posted Thursday, March 2 2017 at 10:16

    In Summary
    • The US giant, which is the supplier of Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet of Dreamliners and other Boeing planes, had until now had a presence only in North Africa.
    • The world’s largest aerospace company projects Africa would be in need of 1,150 new airplanes over the next 20 years as the most recent Current Market Outlook report predicted that air traffic to and from the continent is expected to grow by about 6.1 per cent annually

US-based aerospace and defence company Boeing International is set to open a Nairobi office as it seeks to tap new Africa deals.

Boeing, which has been weighing options of opening an office either in Kenya or Ethiopia to gain a foothold in the eastern Africa market, will also open another office in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Chamsou Andjorin, the Boeing director of government affairs and market development, will head the Nairobi office while the Johannesburg office will be headed by Joao Miguel Santos, Boeing’s managing director for sub-Saharan Africa, a South African media report said.

“Africa is not new territory for Boeing. Since the introduction of the jet airplane, Boeing aircraft have formed the backbone of the continent’s commercial fleet and Boeing continues to be one of the largest US-based companies doing business on the continent,” Mr Santos was quoted by South African media confirming the development.

“The aerospace industry needs to start paying closer attention to Africa, because this continent is clearly on the move economically and all the trends are pointing in the right direction for the expansion of the sector. Our job is to be ahead in understanding these emerging trends and opportunities.”

The US giant, which is the supplier of Kenya Airways and Ethiopian Airlines’ fleet of Dreamliners and other Boeing planes, had until now had a presence only in North Africa.

Kenya and Ethiopia have recently been racing to attract foreign direct investments into their economies with creation of special economic zones and promises of lower costs of doing business including cheap electricity.

“Talent and comparative advantage will guide us in our choice of location in the region,” said Boeing’s senior vice president Marc Allen on the sidelines of an American business forum in Nairobi in 2015.

America's Largest Engineering and Construction Company, Bechtel Is Moving Its African Operations From London To Nairobi

As an indication of rising interest in Africa by the U.S. engineering and construction giant Bechtel, the company's president for Africa is relocating from London to Nairobi.

Bechtel is the ninth largest privately-owned American corporation, according to Forbes. Andrew Patterson took up the Africa post in 2015 after serving with the firm in Kosovo, Panama and Iceland.

During last month's U.S. Africa Business Summit in New York, Patterson joined President Obama's Advisory Council on Doing Business in Africa. He talked with AllAfrica about Bechtel's approach to doing business and plans for an expanded presence in Africa

How does Bechtel's approach differ today from how you operated in Africa in the past?

Bechtel has been in Africa for over 70 years now, working with most countries in Africa at some period through that time. We're building on what we've done in Africa, looking at the needs of governments. What are they looking for? They need the next generation of infrastructure to build their economies. Some of those projects can be self-financed under a PPP [public-private partnership] model and a lot of projects can't.

How would you describe the focus of Bechtel activities in Africa?

We're focused on early engagement with governments, figuring out ways of structuring deals that they need to move forward with large projects where it makes sense that we can bring value. We bring value in finding creative solutions on how to structure works and obtain financing. We help governments look at the right structure for those projects and how can they work with the private sector to create the best model to move forward quickly to deliver the next-generation infrastructure they're looking for.

We look at how to deliver projects that suit the governments' needs, such as how to deliver projects in phases. How do you work with local institutions, local companies, local supply chains, and build capacity to provide knowledge? See Andrew Patterson blog: What is a Bankable Project in Africa?

Kenya overtakes SA as biggest investor in African countries

    Quote:
Kenya overtook South Africa to become the biggest investor in other African countries in terms of the number of projects in 2015.

Kenya invested in 36 projects last year in other parts of the continent against South Africa’s 33, a new study by financial consulting firm Ernst & Young shows.

It noted that most of Kenya’s intra-Africa investments went into countries within the East African Community (EAC).

The study said Kenya’s global ranking as a source of foreign direct investment (FDI) to the African continent also improved strongly to the seventh position in 2015 from 13th in 2014.

“Activity was largely concentrated in services, with financial and business services together accounting for nearly 78 per cent of FDI projects originating from Kenya,” said the report released Monday.

“Many Kenyan companies are playing the role initially adopted by South Africa’s corporate sector, who were the first to venture outside their home markets,” it adds.

South Africa however beat Kenya in terms of the worth of the projects as it had Sh200 billion compared to Kenya’s Sh100 billion.

In the past decade, Kenyan banks and retail businesses, for example, have ventured into the region including in the volatile South Sudan and Somalia.

“East Africa is the primary destination for Kenyan investors, in line with overall sub-regional integration plans,” said the study.

It further shows that Africa attracted FDI from a diverse and growing group of investors.

In 2015, the US retained its position as the largest investor in the continent, despite a four-per cent fall in FDI projects. Historical investors, including the UK, France, the UAE and India, expressed renewed interest in Africa.

Other notable investors in Africa were Italy and Luxembourg, which became among the largest 15 investors in 2015. Overall, intra-African FDI projects rose 2.8 per cent in 2015, with capital investment up 6.2 per cent.

In terms of inward FDI in 2015, the study shows that Kenya, touted as East Africa’s anchor economy, posted a resurgence with projects standing at 95 compared to 62 the previous year, an increase of 53.2 per cent.

At the same time South Africa had more inward FDI projects numbering 130 in 2015 compared to 120 projects in 2014 , an 8.3-per cent increase.

Kenya and East Africa is shining bright and even brighter in the comparison with its peers. Kenya is very much the leader in this region and because of a good component of diversification, is maintaining a strong rate of GDP expansion,” Rich Management CEO Aly Khan Satchu said of the report’s findings.
