The new Kipevu Oil Terminal (KOT) is expected to breathe new life to a terminal that has existed for over 50 years. ‘

The terminal will have a capacity of 100,000 metric tonnes and handle over 4 vessels at a time.

The Ksh. 40 Billion project will also have a Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG) line which is expected to increase LPG supply in the country.

The Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) estimates that the new KOT will be complete by August 2021.

Works on the Kipevu Oil Terminal project have been underway since February last year as the government seeks to supplement the two existing facilities at Shimanzi and the old Kipevu terminal, which are too small to handle large quantities of imported oil and gas.

On completion, the new oil terminal will have four berths capable of handling the importation and exportation of crude oil, heavy fuel oil, aviation fuel, petrol, and diesel.

The project is being developed by China Communications Construction Company(CCCC).

In the past week, a total of 30 new trailer trucks were commissioned to serve the Kenya Ports Authority (KPA).

The Sh273.4 million investment on new 30 terminal tractors, will boost cargo handling capacity at the Port of Mombasa and the Inland Container Depot-Nairobi.

The move will see an increased uptake of transport by the Standard Gauge Railway(SGR) from the Port of Mombasa to Nairobi.

By the way all the funding is from KPA not GOK. KPA is the only port management company in east africa that is rated by global rating companies. This company has an asset inventory worth more than safaricom and KCB bank combined.
It funded the kisumu port expansion and together with KPC (Kenya pipeline company) and KRC (Kenya railways) they are funding the revamp of Nakuru-Kisumu mgr and the Nakuru-eldoret-malaba mgr through special dividends to GOK.
