Radiation alert issued over Minjingu mine

Phophate found at Minjingu Mine about 100 km west of Arusha has some elevated levels of dangerous radiation, the Tanzania Atomic Energy commission (TAEC) has said.
Briefing the visiting deputy Minister for Higher Education, Science and Technology, Gaudensia Kabaka, a TAEC expert, Firmi Banzi, said the radiation of Minjingu phosphate mine is very harmful to human health, if protective measures are not taken.
Taking into consideration the dangers of the radiation, TAEC after making the discovery, advises that appropriate measures be taken to protect all at the mine, Banzi told the Minister at the weekend.
Research conducted in various parts of the world has revealed that materials with coal, phosphate, monazite and granite normally have elevated levels of natural radiation, explained, Banzi who is head of environmental of radioactive waste management directorate .
