Welcome to Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) website
The Tanzania Commission for Universities (TCU) was established on 1st July2005, under the Universities Act (Chapter 346 of the Laws of Tanzania) to succeed the former Higher Education Accreditation Council which had been in operation since 1995. Prior to the establishment of TCU, all universities and non-university level higher education institutions implemented their mandatory functions as stipulated in their individual Acts of Parliament or constitutions including the development of internal quality assurance systems. Under the Universities Act, all Acts of Parliament that established public universities and university colleges were repealed and these and all other similar institutions were required by law to register themselves under TCU through which they could be processed for grant ofCharters by His Excellency the President of the UnitedRepublic of Tanzania.
TCU is thus a body corporate mandated torecognize, approve, register and accredit universities operating in Tanzania, and local or foreign university level programs being offered by non-TCU registered higher education institutions. TCU also coordinates the proper functioning of all university institutions in Tanzaniaso as to foster a harmonized higher education system in the country. In order to ensure that such a harmonious higher education system doesnot compromise institutional peculiarities and autonomy, each university has the legal right to operate under its own Charter.

Dear viewers, TCU is a body corporate mandated to recognize, approve, register and accredit Universities operating in Tanzania, and local or foreign University level programs being offered by non -TCU registered higher education institutions. TCU also coordinates the proper functioning of all university institutions in Tanzaniaso as to foster a harmonized higher education system in the country. In order to ensure that such a harmonious higher education system doesnot compromise institutional peculiarities and autonomy, each University has the legal right to operate under its own charter. The roles of TCU can be clustered into the following main categories: (i) Regulatory: Conductingperiodic evaluation of universities, their systems and programs so as to oversee quality assurance systems at the universities and in the process leading to newinstitutions to be registered to operate in Tanzania, and the existing the institutions to be accredited, and validation of universityqualifications attained from local and foreign institutions for use in Tanzania. (ii) Supportive: Ensuring the orderly performance of the Universities and the maintenance of the setquality standards, by providing support to universities in terms ofcoordinating the admission of students, offering training and other sensitization interventions in key areas like quality assurance, university leadership and management, fund raising and resources mobilization gender aspects in university management and gender mainstreaming,etc. (iii) Advisory: Advising government and the general public on matters related to the higher education system in Tanzania, including program and policy formulation on higher education, and the international issues pertaining to higher education. It is my expectation that TCU will receive your maximum support in implementing its mandate and make University education contribute to the development of the country in general.
