New ethnic fighting in Nairobi slum

NAIROBI, Kenya - Renewed ethnic fighting broke out in a Kenyan slum Sunday following the deaths of more than 20 people in demonstrations against the disputed re-election of President Mwai Kibaki.

Several homes were set ablaze in Nairobi's Mathare slum in hours of running battles between Kikuyu and Luo ethnic groups, resident Boniface Shikami said.

Kibaki belongs to the Kikuyu, Kenya's largest ethnic group, while opposition leader Raila Odinga is a Luo.

An Associated Press reporter saw the body of a Luo man who had been beaten to death after riding his bicycle through a group of Kikuyus. Another staggered past with blood streaming from the stump of his arm, which had been cut off with a machete. The arm was taken by a group of youths and placed on top of a pile of stones barricading an alleyway.

Shikami said Luos on his street had received notices warning them to leave by nightfall or risk attack. Philipe Rebeiro of the aid group Doctors Without Borders said his organization had treated 10 people for machete and ax wounds.

On Saturday, Kenya's opposition party called for another day of "peaceful rallies" against the government across Kenya in defiance of a ban. At least 24 people were killed in demonstrations Wednesday through Friday - all but seven of the deaths blamed on police.

Opposition party chairman Henry Kosgey told reporters on Saturday: "We will use each and every means to bring down Kibaki's government."

The European Union asked the opposition not to hold rallies.

"Mass meetings ... can lead to violence," EU Development Commissioner Louis Michel said Saturday, after holding what he called "positive" meetings with both Kibaki and Odinga. He said both sides "appeal to end the violence," and had agreed to recognize mediation efforts by former U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan.

Five people died in ethnic clashes Saturday when three ethnic groups - Kalenjin, Kisii and Kikuyu - fought each other with bows and arrows and machetes in villages around the Catholic Kipkelion Monastery in the Rift Valley, some 185 miles northwest of Nairobi, according to a reporter at the scene. Police confirmed they had arrived Saturday afternoon and were guarding the monastery, where hundreds of people have sought refuge.

Nearly 200 houses were set ablaze in what appeared to be an old argument about land.

More than 600 people have been killed in Kenya's election violence, according to a government commission.

U.S. Ambassador Michael Ranneberger said Friday there had been "a lot of cheating on both sides" in the Dec. 27 elections that pitted Kibaki against Odinga.

Ranneberger said either Odinga or Kibaki could have won by 120,000 votes because it was a close election and both sides are alleged to have rigged the election. But David Throup, an associate of the Washington-based Center for Strategic and International Studies, said in a public conference call with Ranneberger that Odinga won by 120,000 votes.

Annan is expected to arrive in Kenya Tuesday to head mediation efforts, his office in Geneva said.

Michel, the EU development commissioner, met Saturday with Deputy President Kalonzo Musyoka and urged him to come to an agreement with the opposition "because the consequence of chaos will be so important and so badly affect the people and the region."

Musyoka said, "We are trying to come out with a healing process and a process which also ensures we engage each other as Kenyans in dialogue."
