JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) - Students at Arkansas State University will be able to enroll in accelerated classes this fall in Mandarin Chinese and Swahili.
There is increasing demand among U.S. businesses for speakers of the two languages. About 1 billion people speak Mandarin and about a quarter-billion people speak Swahili, which is prominent on the east African coast.
The classes will be taught as intensive courses for six hours of semester credit. The instructors are both students in ASUs Heritage Studies Ph.D. program. Xiaoyun Winnie Wu will teach Chinese and Isaac Ongoa will teach Swahili. Accelerated courses in Arabic are also to be taught.
The introductory classes will be available only in the fall. In the spring, intermediate classes in Arabic, Mandarin and Swahili are planned.
