Jokes aside I really hope Kikwete remembers this very significant and crucial gesture from Mkapa and is ready to do the same with Magufuli now as he is in the same position.
I really wonder though, with Magufulis current actions that have clearly been seen like demeaning the former regime and his total dis regard to favors and collusion with the powers present in the party (e.g. makamba, lukuvi et.al) , will Kikwete and CCM heavy waits who have been poked in the eye really just let this pass?
Hard to believe given the mans propensity for REVENGE.

Kikwete Relieved As Mkapa Opts Out

With former president Benjamin Mkapa still chairman of Tanzania's ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi, there was always the threat that he could influence the party rank and file against his successor, President Jakaya Kikwete.

Until he voluntarily opted out of chairmanship last weekend, talk had been that Mkapa was hell-bent on sabotaging Kikwete's leadership, which is beset by numerous problems.

Among the major problems facing Kikwete is the sudden economic slump and a sharp rise in crime. So much was the animosity and fear that Mkapa retreated from public glare to fend off virulent attacks over his supporters' plot to undermine the current political establishment.

At a recent CCM congress in Dodoma, Mkapa insinuated that the bad blood between him and his former Foreign Affairs minister had precipitated his premature retirement from the post he should have held until next year. He, tongue in cheek, told his audience:

"Those of you who were in this hall in 1995 will recall the poisoned political atmosphere at the time. You will also recall the speech Kikwete made on that occasion. It required great courage to give a speech of that kind. It required great self-restraint to be able to control the emotions that were threatening to boil over. It too required great courage to calm down his supporters for the presidential bid and even ask them to support me. You are all my witnesses that he lived up to the promises he made here."

The former president said party leadership and the presidency become easier to run when vested in one person. It did not escape political observers what Mkapa was alluding to, and at the same time responding to the vilification he has had to put up with since he left office late last year. The genesis of the bad blood between Mkapa and his successor was founding President Mwalimu Julius Nyerere's decision to back Mkapa for the presidency, despite Kikwete having won the nomination run for the presidency, more than 10 years ago.

The grudge persists to this day, even with Mkapa out of office. The worst moment for the two came during the party's presidential nominations last year, when muffled hostility opened up cracks within the party, which have widened ever since. While one faction coalesces around Kikwete, the other rallies behind former Prime Minister and Organisation of African Unity (now African Union) Secretary-General Dr Ahmed Salim Ahmed. Mkapa supported Salim's presidential bid last year, until he was prevailed upon to switch camps at the eleventh hour as the party looked headed for a major split. Salim, who is United Nation's Secretary-General Kofi Annan's special envoy to Sudan's troubled Darfur province, did not attend last weekend's CCM congress.

Kikwete took over the leadership of the party with the primary goal of getting rid of Mkapa adherents. First out was long-serving party Secretary-General Philip Mangula and political and ideology secretary, the eccentric Omar Mapuri, who was also Home Affairs minister in Mkapa's regime.

Mangula was replaced with Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Yusuf Makamba, who just a week before had been nominated Member of Parliament by Kikwete.

Out also went former treasurer Salome Mbatia, who was replaced with Rostam Aziz, a leading Arusha-based businessman and Ihunga MP, who literally financed Kikwete's election campaign when the party seemed to be at a loss after Kikwete's presidential nomination.

So benevolent was he to Kikwete that Aziz was at some point touted a possible candidate for the Finance minister's portfolio for standing solidly behind Kikwete since his first election bid in 1995.

The changes in the party come at a time when Kikwete is also putting together a team to start a Kiswahili daily newspaper to give voice to his policies. People close to him say Kikwete has often expressed discomfort with party-owned Uhuru newspaper, which is said to be dominated by his political adversaries. This illustrates just how the current CCM set up is wary of growing dissent in a party that has lately looked anything but united.

Hitherto, Kikwete has had to rely on the goodwill of private media owners to disseminate his policies. However, the threat of dwindling profits makes such goodwill look perilously short-lived as at some point private media owners may want to run their outfits as profitable enterprises and not Government or party mouthpieces, hence the decision to start a daily.

Add this to the fact that one of the leading media houses, Mwananchi Communications, is partly owned by Ferdinand Ruhinda, an influential CCM member and one of Mkapa's bosom friends, Kikwete has every reason to hedge against potential deliberate misinformation.

This is the imminent political scenario Kikwete warned against in his acceptance speech. He warned that the party ran the risk of being compromised if it continued depending on unreliable benefactors.

"We must rake our brains and come up with workable strategies and programmes that will ensure that the party has reliable sources of income. It is risky to continue depending on alms from well-wishers. They will embarrass us some day," he said.

Meanwhile, while Kikwete consolidates his power in the party, his rush to accept the party post raised many questions.

Despite the growing disenchantment with the current political set up in Tanzania, Kikwete remains quite popular. What is new is increasing open dissent, which explains why one person voted against him despite the overwhelming support he still commands in the party.

I wonder who will come on top. The crooks of CCM or Dr President and the righteous within CCM

Kamishna akiamua kumwaga mtama, hakika tutajua mengi kuliko tunayoona.

Hata mimi naona hivyo.
