Kidero: Matatus will not be kicked out of Nairobi's CBD - Nairobi News
Matatus will not be locked out of the envisged Urban Transport Plan, Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero assured the owners on Friday.
He said the proposed Bus Rapid Transit system will not kill their business.”We are in no way going to disenfranchise matatus (owners) or to make them lose business,” said the governor.
Speaking to matatu drivers and touts at a city hotel, Kidero said the BRT will have five inter-connected lines named after Kenya’s Big Five animals: Ndovu (elephant), Simba (lion), Chui (leopard), Kifaru (rhino) and Nyati (buffalo).
They will be used by buses to ferry commuters to all key city suburbs. “BRTs aims to ease urban mobility and make commuting a less stressful experience for the over 2.6 million people currently entering or leaving the city daily,” said Kidero.
BRT is a simple transportation system that takes the principle of rail transport onto the road. Public buses are given their own designated lanes separate from those used by other vehicles.
Major roads leading to Nairobi— Mombasa Road, Thika Super Highway, Ngong Road, Jogoo Road and Waiyaki Way— could easily be converted to arterial roads with designated bus ways.
“I am aware they have been asking for bribes to release drivers and touts arrested on flimsy grounds,” said Kidero. They accused the county inspectorate department of harassment, adding that they have to part with between Sh500 and 1000 to secure release. Kidero, at the same time, urged them to obey the law and elect credible leaders in the August 8 poll.
He said the county government has set aside Sh500 million for the youth in the next financial year, adding that the kitty will be channelled through a registered Saccos of the matatu crews. EDS/MK/009/006/017
Kidero pledged to look at the challenges facing the Nairobi transport sector and look at previous decongestion reports, implement short and long term public transportation plans, introduce mass rapid transport and ensure peaceful co-existence within the CBD. The county chief also pledged to have a meeting with the county commander and traffic commandant next Thursday on constant arrest of the drivers and touts.
