A look at some of Kenya's tribal communities;
* Kenya's 36 million strong population are split into more than 40 ethnic groups, each unique with its own strong identity, traditions and languages.
* Kikuyu is the largest group, dominating 22 per cent of the population, while Luhya takes up 14 per cent, Luo 13 per cent and Kalenjin 12 per cent.
* President Kibaki is from the Kikuyu tribe. His group comes mainly from the agriculturally rich central highlands and wields strong economic power.
* Opposition Leader Raila Odinga is a Luo from western Kenya.
* Many Luos feel they've been politically cheated by Kikuyus over Kenya's turbulent history. Odinga's father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga, fell out with founding President Jomo Kenyatta, a Kikuyu, within three years of 1963 independence.
* Former Preisdent Daniel arap Moi is from the Kalenjin group, which has produced most of the nation's famous long distance runners.Moi's allies were blamed for the 1989 assassination of rising Luo politician, Robert Ouko. The case was never resolved.
*Meanwhile the Maasai, which is one of Kenya's most popular tribes because of its tourism market, only makes up a little over 1 per cent of the population. The Maasais believe God gave them all the cattle on earth and were entirely dependent on the creatures alone for centuries. It's believed many people in the tribe still live on just milk and fresh blood.
* Ethnic rivalries often worsen during election time. The worst incidents were recorded in 1992 when some 1,500 people died in tribally tinged land clashes in the Rift Valley region. In 1997 another 200 were killed in the resort town of Mombasa.
