It is time members of the East African Community called Tanzania's bluff.

Our southern neighbour has become a veritable impediment to integration and progress in the region.

Everytime a useful proposal is put forward, it throws a spanner in the works. Kenya, Uganda and the two candidate-members of the Community, Rwanda and Burundi, should simply shrug Tanzania off and forge ahead.

The latest Tanzanian objection is the proposal to allow the use of identity cards when crossing borders instead of the requirement for passports, which relatively few ordinary East Africans have anyway.
The effect of the Tanzanian veto is to limit the movement of people about, who in most cases are traders going back and forth. It is difficult to see the logic of Dar es Salaam's objection.

At this rate, the dream of federation by 2013 will remain dead as long as Tanzania is allowed to dictate terms.

Tanzania has for many years been consumed by a large deceit of thinking it is more important than it actually is.

Basically, it still lives in a time warp where it is forever harping on its old credentials of being a linchpin of the liberation struggles of southern Africa.

WITHOUT DOUBT THIS WAS A historically important role. But the world of today is being shaped not by re-living the progressive glories of the 60s but by learning to adapt to fast-changing economic trends of today.

Tanzania is dirt poor, its economy a fraction of Kenya's. Further, it lacks the dynamism and skills to drive its economy forward at the pace of its neighbours. Even tiny Rwanda has a better capacity than can be said of Tanzania.

The latter's prickly sense of wanting to be alone is sadly misguided.
Regional prosperity depends on the exchange of skills that free movement of peoples and investment across borders allows.
It is myopic to think Kenyans who venture into Tanzania are only going to take away Tanzanian jobs and opportunities. They are bringing skills, money and enterprise which they cross-pollinate in Tanzania.

It is also wrong to fear that Kenya's more developed economy is a threat to Tanzania's and thus should be kept at bay.

That argument flies in the face of all known precedents. Mexico knows the immense benefits it reaps from the North America Free Trade Association

(NAFTA) even though its economy can nowhere be compared with the United States' or Canada's.

Likewise countries like Slovakia or Croatia would not have been clamouring to join the European Union to be in the company of more advanced members like France and Germany.

But the cost-benefit ratio in such situations favours the poorer members.

Of the leaders of the East Africa Community, President Yoweri Museveni is by far the most far-sighted on this question of integration, He is surely right in urging those countries for the idea to go ahead on their own and cast off the laggards.

One country cannot and should not be allowed to hold the process of integration hostage. Another leader who is emerging as a real visionary is Rwanda's President, Mr Paul Kagame.

He has already okayed the abolition of work permits for Kenyan professionals going to work there. Kenya too, has agreed on a similar waiver for Rwandan job-seekers.

Kenyans who have been in Tanzania know the great difficulties of getting a local work permit.

Working without one in that country is a highly perilous game, as the infamous deportations of Kenyans from there that were carried with utmost malice routinely attest.

Tanzania greatly likes to be recognised for her 'internationalist' policies, with her leaders spending more time strutting the world than they do in their own country, though the facts show they are quite parochial.

TANZANIA'S GENERALLY CONFUSED posture comes out in its obsession to belong to the Southern African Development Community (SADC).

There is probably less of an economic rationale for this fling than there is a political one. Nothing gladdens Tanzania's heart than to be seen to be close to South Africa.

But things have surely changed since the days of the liberation struggle.

Other than a broadly progressive political outlook, the two countries have very little in common.
***
Tanzania does not want integration, it has more to lose than gain. The politicians do not have a strategic plan for Tanzania's interests and are caught between optimistic rhetoric and practical regional strategy.

Well written, everything I always wanted to say. You are stuck in the past bros, with a teenage girl crush on SA, sorry to say, you will be heart broken.

what a load of bunkum thinking how does kenya going to help tanzania economically kenya itself being a developing nation. The only thing kenya is good at is following the infrastructure that was set by its colonial masters, its comparative advantage in farming the products. the produce west needed but cant farm in their lands. today those farms are still much under white settlers.

the country has sold even its national parks indirectly to the west which helps its tourists. so how do these people going to help us or are they suggesting we sell everything like they do.

we are only beggining to bring investment in tanzania already they are queueing up for those little jobs we have created, may be they should think about creating cities investment too, rather than stuck fighting in increasing their raw products exports ot the west. that kind of thinking does not improve job chances but governmet income. this is why you see them seeking employment in our country. well we do have enough for ourselves that last thing we want is a flock of immigration.

with regard to your id scheme how good can it be considering the pull factor in most migration is based on improving peoples lives. you lots moving to tanzania you'd receive fair treatment and hospitality from us do to our tolerate nature what about us especially in places like Rwanda, Burundi and Uganda which have high nationalists ideas and Ukabila so it seems tanzania will be receiving rather than push some of its poeple the other direction no to that.

looking at job opportunities i know a man that has an engineering degree and went back to uganda from a well respected engineering University in the UK. upon arrival in Uganda he was told he was over qualified, that is due to their tribal thinking to date this man is unemployed for a year now with id schemes he would become our responsibility. so no to that again and not to mention the burundis and rwandas who were terrorizing our lands before JK took care of them with their arm robberies and killing people as if they where chickens for cars that are not worth even a $1000 in tanzania and very little money again no to id, because some people do not value others lives here in tanzania we do.

at least with south africa we can get some services and products that we can not afford directly from many industrialized countries. but what does the EAC has to offer us apart from their segregation ideas and a massive immigration. as you can see though our democracy is still young but we practise it in a sense you see us everyday arguing about ufisadis and corrupt leaders and unfair waste of money. in uganda museveni is now to the point of selling forests without the question of no one that absurd if you ask me. i think you guys need to sort your problems first that average citizens ways of thinking before asking for the id schemes because it wont be fair on us.

lastly we have 99 problems and EAC aint one hit it.

our worry is not just on economic front as you guys seems to insist, we are also worried of importing social & cultural problems from your countries (LRA-uganda, Rwanda and Burundi-Uhutu v/s Ututsi and Kenya-Kikuyu v/s Luo and the rest)

as long as you guys are not able to sort out your problems...no intergration is gonna happen soon...and you know what, you need us and that explains as to why you guys are not able to go on your own....

If I was one of the East African presidents, ningeiwekea Tanzania vikwazo na ni itenge kabisa, you are slowing down a much needed federation just because of some silly confidence problem, grow up man, what do you have to lose, your minerals? land? ustaarabu? what???

You guys have a strong hate for EAC for no reason at all, some of you dont even know why they are arguing against a federation they know nothing about, they just know its a bad thing just because one or two people they know are against it. Do your research, and stop being fed rumours.

Well to the boy who pretends to be Smatta aren’t we on computers right or in your head this is some sort of postal service. There is a thing called MS-Words which has so many features that can impress if impression is what you’re looking for. Sadly I aim to get to the points, and also schooling in your little word where white man is the main evil of everything. With that feature MS-W forget about my punctuation I can make my English appear oxford educated if I choose to, but im not here for that unfortunately ie the features were created with the people speaking the language so if my teacher was Russian he did a pretty good job grow up.

To the main point

Mh, Mzalendohalisi

Hamna mtu hapa mwenye chuki wala kutaka kujigawa bali tuna angalia feature impilicatons especially kwenye boarders control.

Mwisho amna anaekata msimamo wa biashara na majirani zetu actually it’s a good thing kushea baadhi ya majukumu hayo ili kujaribu kujisaidia wenyewe.

I totally agree with you that the idea of EAC is good but our neighbors need to solve their internal problems before rushing Tanzania into integration.I know most of our neighbors have big eye for Tanzania vast resources but Tanzania cannot AND will NOT solve your land problems, your tribalism, favoritism and corruption.Tanzania resources will remain for development of Tanzania and Tanzanians themselves and not otherwise.

Yes i do agree that we need to cooperate and do business among each other but that has to be done in smart way and not in a rush way!
We learned a lot from the former East Africa Community and in our own union with Zanzibar.

So before blaming Tanzania for slowing down the integration process...integrate your own tribes and other groups into your system so that all of you can share your national resources equally!..then come to us for EAC.If you guys think that this is too much to take then your free to join other nations like Somalia,Eritrea, and move on ...
