Most of us knew his name by reading his articles and opinions in Mzalendo, Daily News and Uhuru; He was one of the leading nationalists of his time and indeed a patriot of Africa, a true son of our beloved motherland. Mr. Chiume who was born in Malawi and later exiled to Tanzania was a "leader of Nyasaland African Congress and served as the Minister of Education and the Minister for Foreign Affairs in the 1960s." according to one popular website. Beside writing for Tanzania Newspaper he also authored several books.

During the Malawian Cabinet Crisis in 1964 he was exiled to Tanzania where he stayed until 1994 after Multi-Party were reintroduce in Malawi. Mr. Chiume died suddenly today in NY a the age of 78. Funeral arrangements are being made.

Alinihadithia jinsi walivyoenda accra mwaka 1958 akiwa na kina nyerere, kenyatta na babu. Alieleza walivyompata lumumba na jinsi lumumba alivyokuwa mkalimani kati ya nyerere, sekotoure na wengine kwa kutumia kiswahili na kifaransa. Ni mwanamapinduzi wa kweli. Tutamkumbuka mwafrika huyu. Poleni sana wafiwa wote. Hii inanikumbusha mortality ya binadamu wote na kuwa ile jamii ambayo ilipigania uhuru wa bara hili ndiyo wanatuondoka. Kanyama Chiume (born as Murray William Kanyama Chiume, Nkhata Bay District, Nyasaland, 1929) was a leading nationalists in the struggle for Malawi’s independence in the 1950s and 1960s. He was also one of the leaders of the Nyasaland African Congress and served as the Minister of Education and the Minister for Foreign Affairs in the 1960s. He attended Makerere University in Uganda.

Along with Henry Masauko Chipembere and Dunduzu Chisiza, Chiume was active in organizing popular support in the mid to late 1950s for Hastings Banda and in persuading Banda to return to Nyasaland in order to lead the country to independence. Along with Chipembere and three other "unofficials," he was elected to the Nyasaland Legislative Council when a revised constitution came into effect in 1955. He was given a senior post in the Congress at its Nkhata Bay conference in August 1958.

In March 1959, Chiume avoided arrest while he was in London during "Operation Sunrise" when the local colonial government rounded up and interned members of the Nyasaland African Congress during the state of emergency. In July 1960 he joined Banda, Orton Chirwa, Aleke Banda and other prominent Africans at the Nyasaland Constitutional Conference in London. It was here that British Government decided that Nyasaland (Malawi) should become self-governing by early 1963, and that Banda, should become prime minister. Chiume was made Minister of Education in 1962 and went on to become Foreign Minister in the first government formed after Malawi's official independence in July 1964.

Kanyama Chiume died on 21 November 2007 in the USA were he was living in retirement with his family.

Chiume was a key leader in the 1964 Malawi Cabinet Crisis. He was labeled the leader of the crisis and an enemy of Banda after displeasing Banda with a speech in Cairo during a conference for the Organisation of African Unity. He was subsequently driven out of the (now renamed) Malawi Congress Party and exiled to Tanzania from 1964 to 1994.

While in exile, Chiume became active with Tanzania's "The Nationalist," "Daily News and Sunday News," and "Uhuru" newspapers. He also became and author and publisher of numerous books. He returned to Malawi in 1994 after internal and international pressure on Dr. Banda. After his return Chiume briefly served as Chairman of Malawi National Library Service and the Malawi Book Service. He is now retired from active politics.

It is with deep regret and sorrow that we have to inform friends and the wider Pan-African community that our father M.W. Kanyama Chiume passed away peacefully last Wednesday, November 21, 2007, in New York City.

A service to celebrate Kanyama Chiume's life will be held this Saturday November 24th, 2007 at Flynn Memorial Home, 1652 Central Park Avenue, Yonkers, NY 10710 at 2pm.
