Kwanini City ya Dar isitumie pesa ya michango ya City kufungua parks!! mji gani wa kisasa hauna parks!!
Minister in the Prime Ministers Office (Environment) Dr Batilda Burian yesterday said that a solid waste management control programme in Dar es Salaam city will be implemented for five years, effective this year.
Dr Burian said the programme which is known as Tanzania Strategic Cities Programme, will be implemented from the year 2010 to 2014 under the financial support from the World Bank and the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA).
She was responding to a question from Special Seats MP Mkiwa Kimwanga (CUF), who asked whether the government was aware of poor solid waste management in cities, as only 50 per cent of the waste is collected.
Dr Burian said the solid waste control management programme will also be implemented in other seven regions, namely Mwanza, Arusha, Mbeya, Mtwara, Tanga, Kigoma and Dodoma.
She said through the solid waste collected, the government is expecting to establish electricity projects. She said that so far they are implementing one such energy project at Mtoni dump in Dar es Salaam.
The minister added that the Mtoni project, once completed, will be able to generate 2MW to be sold to the Tanzania Electricity Supply Company (TANESCO).
She said the government is also implementing other environmental projects such as the cleaning of surroundings of the Msimbazi valley under the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).
She said the Environment Master Plan project currently going on in Dar es Salaam, Arusha and Mwanza will be completed this year, adding that it is funded by the government of Korea.
Dr Burian mentioned some of the factors which hinder the control of solid waste in big cities as lack of equipment, poor supervision of environmental regulations by municipal environment officers, poor participation of people as some are reluctant to pay for the service.
