There have been mixed reactions in Uganda to the news that President Yoweri Museveni flew economy class on a commercial airline over the weekend. The ruling party welcomed his move which his spokesman said was to show an example to complaining civil servants that economy class should be used.

But the BBC's Joshua Mmali in the capital Kampala says many Ugandans see his trip as a publicity stunt.

He says a second presidential jet was bought last year, amid opposition.

According to presidential spokesman Tamale Mirundi, the president flew economy class from London to Entebbe on Sunday.

Ugandan leader to get second jet

He was returning from a two-week trip away where he attended the Commonwealth meeting in Trinidad and Tobago.

"He was treated like other passengers," Mr Mirundi told Uganda's state-owned New Vision newspaper.

"If the president can travel economy class, it is an indication that spending colossal sums of money by government officials on business and first class is going to stop," he was quoted as saying.

"He wanted to find out the difficulties travellers face in flying economy class and why government officials complain about the economy class."

Mr Mirundi told the AFP news agency that Mr Museveni wanted to "to cultivate a new feeling among civil servants".

However, Transparency International's Robert Lugolobi in Uganda doubted the president's gesture to clamp down on government spending and corruption, reports the local Daily Monitor newspaper .

"For a man who has two jets for his official travels, once in a while to move in economy class, is that news?" he is quoted as saying.

Kampala — President Yoweri Museveni flew back home from the US on Saturday night on a commercial airliner in the economy class.
According to Tamale Mirundi, the president's spokesman, Museveni's decision to fly on a British Airways flight in economy class was a signal to the Government officials that undertaking official trips in business and first class may be no more.

The President's spokesman stressed that there was no problem with the presidential jet. "We don't have any problem with the jet. He just wanted to travel as an ordinary passenger."
He declined to comment whether the jet had remained in the US for servicing or had been flown home.
At the airports and in the plane, Mirundi said, the President mixed freely with other travellers. "He was treated like other passengers."

According to the sources, the President used the trip not only for adventure but also to warn Ugandan leaders to reduce on luxurious travel abroad.

Museveni once hired a private jet for his pregnant daughter to have a delivery in Europe now the very same man is trying to deceive his people that he is no more extravagant and will be serious with misuse of public funds by his aides?

This seems like a typical public relation stunt. Let's see his commitment by him continuing to travel that way. It shouldn't be a one time thing. By the way why did he travel British Airway? Why didn't he travel with preferably his countries carrier?

There is no point here..

I keep saying this. This is all a public relations stunt. Let's see if they will get read of the presidential jet all together & M7 travel only on economy class hence forth. By the way why did he fly British and not his national career? And is there proof he was actually sitted on economy class instead of business or first class?

Its very risk for president to keep himself / herself so simple.

embu ulizeni hiyo ndege ina first class...jamani ukipanda ATC leo hii siti zote economy class sasa uweziniambia amepanda economy kama hakuna 1st class...anywa kama ipo hongera zake aendelee kula vyema mema ya nchi...
