PRESIDENT KIKWETE TO JOIN COMMISSION FOR EFFECTIVE DEVELOPMENT COOPERATION WITH AFRICA.
The President of Tanzania, Jakaya Kikwete, has accepted an invitation to participate in the Commission for effective development cooperation with Africa. The Danish Prime Minister, Anders Fogh Rasmussen, will chair the commission. Other members include the Prime Minister from Mozambique, Ms. Louisa Diogo, and the President of the African Development Bank, Mr. Donald Kaberuka.
The Commission will aim to present new and creative strategies to revitalise and strengthen international development cooperation with Africa. The main focus will be on youth and employment, as population growth and the high share of youth (46 % of population are between 5 and 25 years old) in Africa represent a particular opportunity and challenge when trying to ensure a prosperous and meaningful future for all.
According to the Tanzanian Press President Kikwete has been nominated by the Danish Prime Minister due to his vast experience and good leadership. Kikwete accepted the nomination since it is in accordance with his Governments policies on youth development through employment.
The Commission will consist of 18 international members drawn from Heads of States and Governments, politicians, experts, business people and representatives from international and regional organizations as well as academia. The first of three meetings is expected to take place in Copenhagen on 16 April, followed by a meeting in Africa in November. The final meeting of the commission is expected to be held in Copenhagen in April 2009.
