President Jakaya Kikwete is due to travel to the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, midweek for the African Union summit, amid hopes that the East Africa Region, particularly Tanzania, will this time around assume presidency of the key continental body.
Kikwete will join other AU Heads of State and Government for the tenth edition of the union`s ordinary session planned to kick off on Thursday this week.
Summit organizers have set January 31 to February 2, 2008, as dates for the gathering, believed to be the top political organ on the continent.

The election of the African Union President is scheduled to take place on February 2.
However, the Eastern African Region needs to produce one candidate to be considered by the Summit.
