Part One The Plot

1

Death in the morning

It is cold at six-forty in the morning. It seems even colder when a man is about to be shot by firing squad. At that hour on 11 March 1963 a French Air Force colonel stood with his hands tied behind a post. Take aim,' the squad leader shouted. There was a crash of rifle fire and it was all over.

The dead man had led a gang of French Secret Army killers in a plot to kill the President of France. The death of the colonel was meant to put an end to any more plots to kill the President. Instead it was a new beginning.

The Secret Army, known as the OAS, hated the President. They had sworn to get rid of him and his Government. They believed that he had betrayed France and the French living in Algeria. Three million French people lived there. But some of the Algerians wanted to get the French out of their country. French soldiers were sent out to Algeria to fight for the French people living there. The war went on for several years. In 1959 President de Gaulle came to power as the man who would finish the war and keep Algeria part of France. But two years later he gave up and called the French Army back to France. Some of them refused to go. They felt he had betrayed them. They formed a secret army. The OAS leaders dared not return to France. Their names were known to the President and his Government. They were forced to stay abroad.

The chief of the OAS was Colonel Marc Rodin. He was in Austria. Later that same morning he was listening to the radio news in a small hotel. He heard the report of the shooting by

firing squad of one of his men. Rodin said, Bastards.' He said it with hate and followed it
