Japan population shrinks by record in 2010

TOKYO – Japan's population fell by a record amount last year as the number of deaths climbed to an all-time high in the quickly aging country, the government said Saturday.

Japan faces a looming demographic squeeze. Baby boomers are moving toward retirement, with fewer workers and taxpayers to replace them. The Japanese boast among the highest life expectancies in the world but have extremely low birth rates.

Japan logged 1.19 million deaths in 2010 - the biggest number since 1947 when the health ministry's annual records began. The number of births was nearly flat at 1.07 million.

As a result, Japan contracted by 123,000 people, which was the most ever and represents the fourth consecutive year of population decline. The top causes of death were cancer, heart disease and stroke, the ministry said.

Japanese aged 65 and older make up about a quarter of Japan's current population. The government projects that by 2050, that figure will climb to 40 percent.

Like in other advanced countries, young people are waiting to get married a
nd choosing to have fewer children because of careers and lifestyle issues.

Saturday's report showed 706,000 marriages registered last year - the fewest since 1954 and a sign that birth rates are unlikely to jump dramatically anytime soon.

Japan's total population stood at 125.77 million as of October, according to the ministry.

And 2010 was the year China overtook the United States in developing the fastest supercomputer.
The Tianhe-1A can perform 2,507 trillion calculations a second and is 29 million times faster than the earliest supercomputers.
China has over the past few years transformed from a country that imported technologies to one that leads in innovation. It is now competing for overseas high-speed railway projects - even in the US, which leads the world in freight railway technology but has almost no high-speed rail expertise.

2009 Germany was replaced from 3rd largest Economy in the world by China
2010 Japan was again replace by China from 2nd largest economy in the world
It is estimated if things will not change as we see by 2020 USA might be no longer a Super power.

For sure Malibu said it all however, I have a different opinion on our ability "kujikongoja taratibu" given our given leadership. Its unfortunate that they hav pegged our economy on the west. Their fall is likely to have a ripple effect to most African countries. Unless we do something about our leadership we might be buried as the west falls. Its very sad.

Ni kweli Japani hawapendi kabisa imigration lakini kwa sasa ndio wanalia na tatito la AGING , kwani wazee wanachelewa sana kufa, wakati huo huo vijana wengi hawataki kapita kuoa wengi wao wanataka maisha tuya single, je wataongezekaje? zaidi ya kuzidi kupungua?Hili tatizo pia liko Ulaya esp. Germany na mbaya zaidi ni kuwa watoto wa kijerumani kwa sasa hawataki kusoma masomo ya Engineering hivyo sijui msitakabali wa taifa hilo miaka 50 ijayo.

Nakobonaga wa kong'wise. Ni lipoongelea kujikongoja na maanisha kuwa kwa sasa Uchumi unaelekewa kuwa driven from Asian countries and Africa, umeona mwaka jana Nchi za Asia na Africa( Tanzania was 7.6%) zilikuwa zinakua kwa asilimia ngapi? na hizo za ulaya?( zingine 2.3%). Ni hali ya wazi kabisa kuwa hata sisi Africa hatujalala hata kidogo.
