Police in Dar es Salaam have arrested a suspected hardcore criminal, one Hemed Said alias Muddy or Tall, who had been on the run. Dar es Salaam Special Police Zone Commander, Mr Suleiman Kova said yesterday that the suspect was arrested at Mabibo Relini in the city after being involved in an accident following a police chase.
Mr Said was arrested while in critical condition after the vehicle he was driving collided with a police vehicle, according to Mr Kova. "The suspect was driving a dark blue Toyota Mark II with registration numbers T 792 AGK and he was headed to a robbery mission, when he was stopped by police officers", he said.
The suspect, however, refused to stop and started speeding off as police gave chase in an incident reminiscent of an action flick. He was not to go too far after his vehicle hit a police vehicle that was part of the chase. When police inspected his car, he was found in possession of four AK 47 guns with 15 rounds of ammunition, among other items.
Mr Said was also found with a Browning pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition, a Star (Markarov) gun with 6 rounds of ammunition, a revolver with 7 rounds of ammunition and 9 other rounds of ammunition. Mr Kova said that he was also found with two fake antes -T 304 ABM-- which had been used in several other robbery incidents, a hammer, an axe, a screw driver, a driver's licence bearing his name and other items.
The suspect is admitted to the Amana Hospital as police continue to investigate his accomplices. Meanwhile, police are holding Mr Francis Masunzu Msayo (50), a resident of Kawe, who has been making homemade guns and filling used ammunition as well as assisting armed bandits. After an inspection, the suspect was found to be in possession of 4 shot guns, a homemade machine for making guns and refilling ammunition, 2 bombs and 4 detonators, 14 gun butts and, several used and unused rounds of ammunition as well as guns.
