South African President Jacob Zuma shares a joke with a family member during his traditional wedding to Tobeka Madiba, his fifth wife​

President Jacob Zuma is reported to have fathered a child with the daughter of a long-time friend, Irvin Khoza, according to the Sunday Times of South Africa.

This brings to 20 the number of children known to have been fathered by President Zuma - along with the 19 he is officially said to have had, with his ex-wife, Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, Kate Zuma, who has since died, and his current wives and girlfriends.

The birth of Baby Thandekile Matina Zuma, now nearly four months old, on October 8 last year, came barely three months before the country's most famous polygamist tied the knot for the fifth time.

Unborn grandchild

Baby Thandekile's mother, Ms Sonono Khoza, who is a 39-year-old divorcée, was pregnant when her father, who is the Orlando Pirates boss and chairman of the soccer World Cup local organising committee, was invited to share the stage with the newly-elected president during a post-election bash at Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal, in June last year.

It is unclear whether the "Iron Duke", as he is known, knew then who was the father of his unborn grandchild.

Ms Sonono, who has two other children from a previous marriage, is an events manager of a Johannesburg bank.

A close family friend told the Sunday Times that a delegation from KwaZulu-Natal, acting on Mr Zuma's behalf, visited the Khoza family in December last year to discuss the Zulu customary damages, inhlawulo, that are due when a child is born out of wedlock.

On January 17, Mr Zuma visited the Khoza family, and spent almost an hour with Ms Sonono and her mother, Ms Matina.

When the Sunday Times contacted Ms Sonono for comment on Friday, she said: "I don't know what you are talking about," before terminating the call. She did not respond to an SMS asking for comment.

Asked how she felt about her new grandchild and the fact that Mr Zuma was the father, Ms Matina responded: "No, we are not excited."

Mr Khoza, whose youngest daughter, Zodwa, died of Aids-related complications in 2006, was not home for either of the two meetings.

Felt betrayed

Several family friends told the Sunday Times that Mr Khoza felt betrayed and humiliated by the president's relationship with his daughter, particularly as he considered Mr Zuma - who is six years older than him - a friend.

Mr Khoza was awarded an honorary doctorate in philosophy from the University of Zululand for his role in the development of sport while Mr Zuma was chancellor of the institution in 2004.

ANC defends Jacob Zuma over 'love-child' claims ​

South Africa's governing African National Congress has defended President Jacob Zuma over claims that he fathered a child outside marriage. The ANC said Mr Zuma had broken no laws and that there was "nothing shameful" in a relationship between two people.​

Opposition parties and newspapers have accused Mr Zuma of setting a bad example in a country battling an epidemic of HIV and Aids.​

One member of parliament urged him to seek treatment for "sex addiction".​

Kenneth Meshoe said Mr Zuma should get help like "Tiger Woods did".​

'Disingenuous'​

On Sunday, Johannesburg's Times newspaper reported that the president, who has three wives and is engaged to a fourth, had fathered a girl born on 8 October 2009 with Sonono Khoza, 39, the daughter of the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee.​

Mr Zuma, 67, was said to have paid compensation for the pregnancy, suggesting that he was not denying paternity.​

In several South African cultures, the father of a child born out of wedlock pays damages known as Inhlawulo to the family of the baby's mother.​

Mr Zuma has so far not commented, but on Monday an ANC spokesman issued a statement tacitly confirming the president had fathered a child and asserting that it considered the matter private.​

"We are of the view that the media and some political commentators are making a mountain out of nothing," Jackson Mthembu said.​

"Why should a relationship between two adults be made an issue? Why should it make headlines? Why is it characterised by some media as a 'Shame to the nation'?" he asked, referring to the headline of an editorial in the Sowetan newspaper.​

Mr Mthembu said the criticism of the president was "disingenuous".
"There is nothing wrong that the president has done. There is nothing 'shameful' when two adults have a relationship," he said.​

"By being involved with any other person, President Zuma is not guilty of any offence and he has not breached our constitution or any of our laws," he added.​

The spokesman also said the ANC saw no links between its policies on HIV/Aids and Mr Zuma's personal life.​

'Sending a message'​

South Africa has the highest number of HIV infections in the world - more than 5 million people.​

Mr Zuma was praised last year when he announced major changes to the country's Aids policy, which included increasing the roll-out of Antiretroviral drugs.​

But opposition parties now say his behaviour contradicts the government's stance on HIV prevention - for example preaching regular condom use and faithfulness.​

"He is the one who is always preaching responsible sexual behaviour, but it seems he is sending a message which says 'Don't do as I do, do as I say'," Independent Democrats leader Patricia de Lille said.
This is not the first time that the president's sexual life has been under the spotlight.​

In 2006, while being acquitted of rape, Mr Zuma admitted that he had made a mistake by having unprotected sex with a woman he knew to be HIV-positive. She was also the daughter of a family friend.​

Mr Zuma has been married five times in all, most recently in January, and is also engaged to another woman. He has 19 children.​

I still laugh at the stupid statement he said after having intercourse with
an HIV postive woman...eti he took a shower to wash it off!!!..That is the

ABT, I remember this statement too and to say the least i was embarrassed for him and the whole of Africa and the fight against AIDS/HIV...Some of my knowledgeable coworkers put me to task...How does one explain away Zumas statement. Mazee nili sweat, hiyo discussion was hot for me.
