A Japanese newspaper reports North Korea has ordered its diplomats overseas to get ready for an "important announcement".

Yomiuri Shimbun quoting several unnamed sources says Pyongyang has told diplomats around the world to stay in one place and refrain from travelling.

The sources speculate the message could be related to North Korea's relations with South Korea or the health of reclusive leader Kim Jong-Il.

The Japanese report comes as South Korea's defense minister Lee Sang-hee told reporters he believes Mr Kim remains in control of the government despite reports of ill health.

Reports of Kim Jong Ill's illness surfaced after he failed to appear at the country's 60th anniversary parade on September 9.
