Iranian president Hassan Rouhani penned down on March 20, a passionate letter to the American public pleading with them to pressure the Trump administration to end the sanctions which as he put it have made his country incapable of waging a successful war on Coronavirus!
That argument flies in the face when facts are fully accounted for: Iranians are funding proxy armies across the middle east challenging authorities there from Saudi Arabia to Syria, refusing a detente while provoking belligerence with peaceful Israel, and diverting vital resources in areas such as health and medical supplies to funnel their unwinnable and senseless wars.
So, last week the Trump administration was dead right to impose the most Iranian economy debilitating sanctions targeting petrochemical industries which when everything is taken into consideration their capabilities to wage military adventures to undermine and destabilize peaceful neighboring regimes will be much rolled back.
Iran is a middle income country but governed by very corrupt Ayatollahs who are busy siphoning off billions of dollars to their own pockets and most recently last year Mr. Rouhani’s chief of staff admitted that more than $1 billion earmarked for importing medicine had simply disappeared! Around the same time a $170 million subsidy for medical supplies was used to import tobacco! To make matters worse nobody was made to account as regime trotters to brook official graft rather than its intolerance!
The US sanctions have a human face and do exempt food supplies and medical supplies despite overt knowledge of most of this philanthropic gesture Iranian authority is redirecting humanely resources for destructive causes and placating cronies. So Iranian president Mr. Rouhani is not truthful knowing the availability of more cash as it happened during the soft policies of Obama administration did not benefit Iranian people but the Ayatollahs lined their pockets and placate the Revolutionary Guards to pop up military incursions in Iraq, Yemen, Syria and refunding of terrorist organizations Hezbollah in Lebanon, Jordan and Syria among others.
Current US sanction regimes are much in order not only to contain the military capacity of Iran to undermine and destabilize peaceful neighbors but also borrowing from the Iranian King Shah coup d'etat playbook is slowly but surely to bleed the Iranian economy to death paving way for a popular uprising that will bring meaningful and enduring change Iranian people have been drooling for a long time now..
