Conventional wisdom inasema kuwa the true intelligentsia lie very low. High brow culture vultures and and clever people are not widely appreciated in the TANZANIA, and there's also a history of feuding between the disparate brain cells, so to speak

Or so I'm told.

That said, I think - we seem to have a tradition in TZ of a) (self-)deprecation of intellect and b) a rather disparate approach to the various types of intellectual pursuit. The brightest person I have ever known (I was at school with him, and friends for some years afterwards until we disagreed on some things) has been close to the centre of political power for more than 15 years, with a couple of sabbaticals in world economic/financial organisations. But he's pretty much unknown, and I wouldn't class him as being 'of the Intelligentsia' in any case. Scholars and academics in Tanzania I have known aren't, either, however brilliant.

I am often astonished at the power of intellect and breadth of culture among some Humanists experts - especially fellow in IR. But who listens to them, eh?

Those who really can lead, critique etc etc, understand the system so well and know what it means (in terms of hardships and sacrifices) to stand up, so they don't.

Those who stand up are mere mediocres like me (taking your advice) and either don't have the right doze and quality of information to make them effective (critics) don't have the brains and commitment to be effective (the Kikwetes of our world) and so on and so forth.
