Tanzanians are also urged to verify authenticity of their devices before mid this month. The statement made by Mr. Hu Xiangyang Jacko, Huawei Device Country Manager, understanding that majority of Tanzanians lacks education to recognize fake mobile phones.

“It is very crucial to verify your devices upon purchase so as to be sure that your device is original. For a customer to know whether a cell phone is genuine or not one should dial *#06# from any devices???, upon which they will receive an IMEI number that again has to be sent as a text message to 15090 to receive a reply showing whether the cell phone is original or fake. For Huawei Smartphones you will receive a reply from TCRA with your phone model eg. (Huawei technologies Co Ltd-HUAWEI Mate 8). Commented Mr Jacko.

According to TCRA about 40% of mobile phones in use in Tanzania are counterfeits. Fake handsets are not only a threat to mobile vendors businesses but to the government and the country at large. As Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) plans to effect a nationwide switch-off of counterfeit Huawei Device Tanzania sees the move as a necessity to the trends that is geared towards curbing crimes, increasing revenue, protecting consumers from substandard phones, safeguarding mobile payment systems as well as to harmonizing communications countrywide.

There is a common misconception in Tanzania with consumers believing that a touch screen is a qualifying factor for a smartphone. And this is what has accelerated to a number of counterfeits flooding the Tanzanian market. Basically, a smartphone enables users to make calls, adds in computer or laptop features, possess an operating system, such as Android OS, web access, as well as apps services.
