Now a days most viruses plan to make the use of USB a nuisance. The reason for my writing here is for the general public in all so that the people can use their USB device without having to infect their system again and again.
HOW TO ACCESS THE FILES IN YOUR USB SAFELY:
First of all you must know never to open your USB that has been not scanned by an anti-virus to open it directly via the Open option. Always explore to the USB device. You can do this by clicking the Folders option on the explorer toolbar in XP. Now you will see a tree view of all the files. Now navigate to your USB drive and then click on it. You can then copy/ paste your files from there.
WHEN NOT TO OPEN YOUR USB?
1- W32. Rjump Virus:
You right click the USB and you see strange writing like this "(o)?x()!!" etc. Never open your USB via the open option because that is the remnant of W32.Rjump virus and will infect your system please open your USB as stated above.
2- W32.Dextor:
When you see Auto as the first option then also it is unsafe to open your USB, as it is W32.Dxtor. This virus is dangerous it will disable your firewall and then try to leave all the ports of your connection to stay open so that the system can be infected with other infections. So never open your USB if you see Auto as the first option. Use the method as stated above.
3- W32.Pacex Virus or AVPO.exe
This virus uses the cleverest method to ill filtrate the system. Its symptoms have been discussed in details and what it does in a separate thread in this forum. Please open your USB via the process stated above.
TIPS TO MAKE YOUR SYSTEM SAFE FROM VIRUSES COMING FROM USBS:
First of all before inserting the USB in your system you must make some arrangements. Go to Tools à Folder Options à Views. Over here uncheck the options.
1- Show hidden files and folders
2- Show hidden operating system files and folders
3- Hide file extensions for known file types.
At the second option you may get a warning but ignore it. Now open your USBS. You will be easily able to see what files are your and which ones are viruses. Thus you must check carefully all .exe files because if they are being shown as hidden they and are .exe they are most likely a virus. Also if you see a folder with the extension .exe that is also a virus. Thus these viruses can easily be deleted. Just don't double click on them. This way you can avoid the most dangerous viruses from entering your system.
TIP:
I suggest changing the icon of your folders via any Icon Changing program. The advantage of this is that in XP the legitimate folders (Valid ones) will have the icon that you selected but the folders having the virus will have the old XP default icon and thus can be identified and removed immediately.
