Elected vice president of Tanzania in 2020, Samia Suluhu Hassan was the first woman vice president in East Africa, the biggest victory for women in Tanzania and around the World. In 2021 after the death of President Magufuli she took over the leadership of Tanzania as President and the first East African female President. She took over during the very challenging time of COVID-19, failing economy, truncated economic diplomacy, and high political tension.

Her one year in the office and her administration’s achievements, including getting the unfinished project finished and others in good progress, uniting Tanzanians, combating unemployment by creating a better investment atmosphere are the litmus test for the best to come for Tanzanians.

Unfinished Projects.
The late president Dr.John Magufuli finished many projects left by his predecessor Dr. Jakaya Kikwete and started new and unfinished projects. President Samia committed herself to finish all the projects in time, within budget, and with high quality. The big projects which have been accomplished include the Tanzanite bridge, Chato airport, expansion of Dar es salaam port, public servant arrears, and many other projects. Some other projects are in good progress like SGR, Julius Nyerere hydropower, phase 2 Dar es salaam rapid transport, and so on. She has also a big plan for new projects like Bagamoyo port, LNG, and many other projects

COVID-19 Pandemic
Her approach in fighting of the COVID-19 pandemic was different from that of her predecessor, where she relied mostly on professionals to advise the country on the approach they should take to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. She formed the expert committee which will assess the current state of the pandemic and comes up with a report on what measures should be taken to address this challenge. The expert’s opinion and recommendation were implemented and the current situation is good.

Uniting Tanzanian.
For the past six years, political ideology has deeply divided people. President Samia Suluhu Hassan has worked very hard to unify the country. She has treated very fair those who criticize his policy position and she has created a good environment for a politician to conduct their politics, media, and professionals to do their job.

She has recently conducted a meeting with some opposition leaders to heal political tension between the leading political party CCM and oppositions parties in Tanzania. Where most prominent opposition leaders on different occasions have been denied the right to exercise politics. We have witnessed, several political leaders fled away from the country to seek asylum in other countries.

Economic diplomacy
Since she took the office she has been working very hard to step up on external earnings to meet the internal need of the country through good economic diplomacy. A domestic decision like the fight ageist COVID-19 pandemic, uplifting freedom of the media, democracy, and improved business environment, has attracted investors and other international organizations to work with Tanzania.

In particular, she has carried out active lobbying for COVID-19 and injected $567m in economic projects related to COVID-19 like the construction of schools, water wells, and health facilities. These projects have not only provided Tanzania with relief to the COVID-19 pandemic but also have provided a great multiplier effect in economic recovery.

Her visit to strategic countries like Uganda where she has to speed up the Uganda and Tanzania crude oil pipeline project of $3.55b, her visit to Kenya which has improved trade facilitation between the two countries, her visit to France, Egypt, and Dubai to improve trade and investment in Tanzania with projects wealth more than $11b. Her administration has regained many investors' confidence and trust as many investors have started to invest in Tanzania.

Empowering women and youth
Distrust for woman's leadership is a global problem, a recent study reveals that developed countries for example, despite their long experiences of women’s leadership remains stubbornly resistant to the idea of women in charge. The tradition paten for some tribes in Tanzania to distrust women in education, leadership, entrepreneurship is shifting, as the number of women is gaining a position in leadership, entrepreneurship, and education. On Liberata Mulamula,Hon StergomenaTax and many more. These increased educational opportunities and access to employment options that were previously unavailable have allowed women to play pivotal roles in national development. She has also made fast and steady progress in empowering women and bringing them close, for example, the number of president advisers are women and they have made an important breakthrough. I don’t know the list of president staff, but the few who are known to ordinary people like me are highly competent like Dr. Zuhura Yunus from BBC, Dr Blandina Kilama from REPOA to name a few.

Combating unemployment
The 294 projects registered by the government worth $8.1b have provided more than 62,301 direct jobs and more than 249,204 indirect jobs. The inflow of foreign direct investment creates a flow of finance, technologies, managerial skills, and other assets. This creates economic development which combats unemployment. President Samia has created more than direct jobs for only one year in the office. More jobs are expected.

She has emphasized increasing the number of employments through establishing local industries. She has opened many industries in Tanzania and advocated industrial parks.

In conclusion, president Samia seems to have a strong commitment to finishing the unfinished projects and starting a new strategic project which will take Tanzania to the next development level. She has treated many if not all the political wounds and other social differences among Tanzanian and it looks like the country is united again. She has reopened Tanzania to the world and her administration has regained local and international trust and confidence.

I hope that we will not erode the many good things that our beloved president has done during her one year in office. Instead, we need to support her and her administration by working hard and following the rule of law.

Tupe KPI za uchumi. Alivyoingia GDP ilikuwa kiasi gani, na baada ya Mwaka mmoja wake GDP ni kiasi gani. Tupe data za Per Capital Income, alivyoingia ilikuwa ni kiasi gani, na mwaka wake mmoja sasa ni kiasi gani?
