How comes?

I hapen to have read a piece of news somewhere today, but the article left me with more questions than answers. Here is one of notoriuos part:

'In 2008, Tanzania raked in USD1.3bn from 642,000 foreign holidaymakers to account for 17.2 per cent of the GDP, while - according to the Kenya Tourism Boar d (KTB) - Kenya earned around USD811m from fewer than 200,000 tourist arrivals despite the disruptive effects of the election-related violence that year.' Can any one help me how this is possible for Tanzania to earn less than our neighbours despite the fact we attracted more tourists?

Or is it we receive third-rate tourists who come and feed themselves with 'mihogo ya kuchoma'?

Partly is because of poor hospitality industry but mainly is ufsadi, our records are not straight. collectors repoit less than the collections while hotel guys do not as well forward the taxes accordingly!

But Sheikh yahya could help to tell what happerns or will, if possible he could help us that any one geting into ufisadi dies instantly! in a year or so, no fisadi no what and TZ oyee.

Hii inawezekana kwani mapato yanategemea na aina ya wateja.

Ukiwa na back-backers kibao unachafua maziungira tu, hupati fedha. Unachoytakiwa kufanya ni kuweka nguvu kupata watalii amabao ni big spenders.

Kikampuni kinachohudumia back-packers 1000 @ $100 kitaingiza $100,000

Kmapuni inayohudumia watalii 500 @ $300 itaingiza $150,000

Wale wenye biashara za hunting wanaweza kuwa na wageni 30 kwa mwaka na kila mgeni akilipa wastani wa $30,000 hapo kampuni ina $900,000.

Ndio maana hunting companies zina hela kuliko tourism.

now i know: improper income record declaration by our people and type of tourists we attract are some of reasons Tanzania 'earns' less than Kenya in tourism.

another reason; which i am afraid might look far fetched is some of Tanzanians holding foreign passports going back home. these would be recorded as tourists as they are holding visas for such. these 'tanzanians' will not spend money in tourists hotels or even visiting our national parks(where i suppose the $1.3bn is mostly accounted for). somehow we need to quantify their monetary contribution to the economy.
