How a long serving guard wiped out an entire family in Dar es Salaam​

Dar es Salaam. Residents of Maryknol Street in Masaki are still in a state of shock on how a silent and peaceful neighbourhood turned into a scene of grisly murder.

Emily Mutayoberwa and her two daughters will be buried today June 14, in Kunduchi, Dar es Salaam but what remains as a puzzle is that their killer was a guard who had served the family for almost 10 years.

According to neighbours, Emily and her daughters had moved into the neighbourhood close to two years now and they came with the guard.

Guards at the neighbouring homes say the last time they saw Emily was on Tuesday evening after two cars drove in, one being hers and the other being that of her alleged ‘boyfriend’.

For three nights, security lights were not turned on and neither did they see Emily going out for her routine workout in the mornings.

Using a hammer, Shadrack Kapanga on the evening of Thursday June 10 ended her boss’ life, he then went on to take the lives of her two teenage daughters Daniela, 15, and Damita, 13 , before he took off to his presumed safety.

But just like the case is with many other crimes, he took away something from the crime scene and it was these items that led to suspicion as he sought a quick getaway the following day.

At his arrest in Magomeni, Police sources say Kapanga was trying to peddle some of the deceased’s possession including mobile phones, a TV set, a DStv decoder and remote controls.

Emilly Mutaboyerwa’s nephew, Fredrick Emmanuel, who is a photographer, who claimed to have talked to the deceased about two weeks ago says he attended the interrogations where Kapanga admitted to have carried out the killings.

He said during interrogations, the suspect reportedly admitted to have opened the gate at 4pm on Thursday when his boss arrived from work.

“However, there was a misunderstanding as the suspect was opening car doors to offload water and beverages. The misunderstanding led to an altercation and it was at that point that Kapanga used a hammer to hit his boss, killing her instantly,” Mr Emmanuel said.

At that point he was not stoppable he was baying for more blood, he headed indoors.

“He rushed to the seating room where the young daughter was watching television. He used the same hammer to knock her to death, before moving upstairs where the older sister suffered a similar fate.”

He told law enforcers that he then collected their mobile phones and put them on sale at Magomeni where suspicious clients reported him to police after seeing blood spots on his trouser leading to his arrest.

According to him, the suspect told the police that the gadgets belonged to his murdered boss, something that forced law enforcers to take him to the scene where he revealed that he carried out the killings following the quarrel.

Though nobody else has been arrested, sources that have sought anonymity say the boyfriend has been arrested and is being held by police for questioning.

With the police working around the clock on forensics found on the scene of crime, may be the motive of the crime and what actually happened will be revealed soon.

We don't know for certain if the alleged murdered did actually commited the crime!

Authority should establish to the public who are the beneficiary out of this tragedy incident!


We don't know if the alleged murdered was acting alone and his/ their motive!

We don't even know why & how the alleged murderer made his confession!

There are too many unanswered questions at the moment and in my opinion I think What we know at the moment is what we are suppose to know

Out of interest, was this a premeditated? Where was the hammer? Does it mean there was no screaming heard by daughters or were the daughters killed before the mother? How did the watchman ferry the stolen property without being noticed by nearby watchmen unless this was done by using a vehicle or the watchman was not acting alone .

True, nikawa najiuliza nimesoma vibaya ama? The guard has to be interrogated to state out more about the boyfriend's car as claimed spotted by the neighbor and provide the whereabouts of the woman's fiance.
