Koteka

Koteka is one of our unique traditional protector of male genital. Modern society may see koteka as uncivilised traditional clothing that should be vanished from the world. However, koteka is one of our identity, at least in the perspective of the development of tribesmen in the land of Papua. We might transform our clothing into modern style, but we would never forget our identity.

The koteka is a a traditional article of clothing worn in New Guinea to cover the penis. Made from a dried gourd and held in place by a small loop of fiber tied to the scrotum. Koteka vary in size, shape and length. Some tribes like them long and thin, others like to wear two, helpful when carrying money and tobacco. But all Koteka, are worn in an upright fashion

Not as popular belief, the size and shape koteka unrelated to the status of the wearer. The size is usually related to user activity, going to work or ceremony. Many of the tribes there can be recognized from the way they use koteka. Short Koteka used when working, and long with the ornaments used in traditional ceremonies.

However, each tribe has a different shape koteka. Yali people, for example, like a long gourd shape. While people usually wear Tiom two pumpkins.

Many tribes can be identified by the way they wear their koteka. Some wear them pointed straight out, straight up, at an angle, or in other directions. The diameter of the koteka can also be a clue. Contrary to popular belief, there is little correlation between the size or length of the koteka and the social status of the wearer.

Kotekas of different sizes serve different purposes: very short kotekas are worn when working and longer and more elaborate kotekas are worn on festive occasions. The koteka is made of a specially grown gourd. Stone weights are tied to the bottom of the gourd to stretch it out as it grows.
