Health scare of the week: A shower of toxins

Vinyl shower liners give off toxic chemicals that can lead to serious health problems, says a new report by an environmental organization. The curtains, sold as such major retailers as Wal-Mart, Sears and Bed Bath & Beyond are made of polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, and contain high concentrations of dozens of toxic chemicals that account for that “new shower curtain smell,” says the Center for Health, Environment & Justice in Virginia. The center’s research team studied the curtains for two years, finding that they released the chemicals into the air and that these toxins can linger there for a month. Many of the chemicals being released have already been linked to damage of the liver, lungs, central nervous system, and reproductive system. The center recommends buying shower curtains not made of PVC.
