Zanzibar's first Vice-President Maalim Seif Sharif Hamad
Zanzibar First Vice-President, Seif Sharif Hamad, has lashed out at local government leaders for discrimination in issuing identity cards in the Isles.
A livid Mr Hamd said that such prejudicial practices are unacceptable and will no longer be tolerated.
"This is unacceptable, we want President Shein to intervene and make sure that justice prevails and all Zanzibaris enjoy their rights regardless of their political affiliation," a visibly not so amused Mr Hamad said.
He was speaking at Bwawani Hotel at the gathering of his party Civic United Front (CUF) members to celebrate one year of victory in Mtoni Constituency. Mr Nassor Ahmed Mazrui of CUF is the current representative of the constituency.
This was the first time for Mr Hamad to openly criticize government officials at any level of partisan bias since the formation of the Government of National Unity (GNU) between his party CUF and Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM).
Seif accused local leaders, She has, for deliberate violation of laws in issuing Zanzibar Identity Cards (ZAN- Ids), mainly discriminating youths believed to be members of the CUF.
"She has receive orders to deny CUF youths' application forms for ZAN-Ids, without proper justification. I kindly ask President Shein to make sure there is fairness and all citizens are equally served," he stressed.
CUF leaders repeatedly complained about the bureaucracy and discrimination in obtaining the identification documents prior to last year's general elections.
They said more than 3,000 youths were denied identification cards and thus were unable to vote. For any Zanzibari to be registered as a voter, he or she needs to have a valid ID card, and CUF leaders attribute low turnout in last year's general elections to lack of the same.
However, government leaders including the Director of Registration at ZAN- Id Office, Mr Mohamed Ame, have repeatedly refuted the allegations.
