Fighting in Nigeria's Parliament – As Speaker is accused of Corruption

There was turmoil in Nigeria's parliament on Tuesday as fighting broke out after a group of members were suspended for accusing the speaker of corruption, causing further distraction in a body meant to be dealing with a raft of pending legislation. The group, calling themselves – The Progressives – are 11 in number, and they called for a probe into allegations that Speaker Oladimeji Bankole misappropriated 9 billion naira of an 11 billion budget from 2008 to 2009. Punches were thrown and at least one person was injured after parliament voted to suspend the 11 members, saying they had "embarrassed" the House with their allegations, which have been widely reported in the local media. "The recent attacks on the speaker and principal officers of this honourable house on television and the pages of newspapers have cast a serious dent on the image of this honourable house," the suspension motion said.
A spokesman for the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said the anti-corruption agency would launch an investigation into the allegations brought by the suspended lawmakers, led by Dino Melaye from central Kogi state. Ebomhiana Musa, special adviser to Bankole, said he trusted the EFCC would find out if the allegations were true or false and take appropriate action. Parliament is supposed to be working on key legislation including electoral reforms and a major overhaul of the country's mainstay oil and gas industry. It had been expected to pass badly-needed legislation on Tuesday to create a bad bank, as they put it, to soak up toxic loans in the financial sector.
Corruption is endemic in Nigeria, from policemen at checkpoints demanding bribes to senior government officials accused of embezzling millions of dollars. More than a dozen former governors and ministers have been accused of corruption in one of the world's most tainted countries, but few have been convicted, with cases getting bogged down in legal wrangling. Politicians have also been known to accuse their rivals of corruption in the hopes of weakening them in the eyes of voters. The country is expected to hold presidential and parliamentary elections by April next year. There is rampant corruption going on in the corridors of Nigeria's power. From state governments to federal institutions, the country seems to be plagued with corruption at the heart of administrative governance. Most Governors and senior government officials are known to be billionaires, in local currency, and maintain an opulent lifestyle with big mansions and expensive SUV's. The makeup of the country's social structure demands that the more houses and cars you have, the more respect you get in society. This has created a desperate desire to get rich quick and sometimes at the expense of the suffering masses.

Israel has one of the strongest Army in the world, yet members of its parliament do exchang jabs in the house to straighten matters.

A full-on brawl erupted yesterday in South Korean Parliament. The South Korean National Assembly turned into a bar brawl from a Jackie Chan film as members of Parliament voted on a media reform bill.

The ruling Grand National Party eventually passed the bill, which called to privatize South Korean media. The opposition Democratic Party felt that the bill was an attempt to rein in local media, and let their fists do the talking.

As the votes proceeded, the assembly's police encircled the deputy speaker, while members of minority parties repeatedly tried to jump onto the dais to halt the proceedings. One woman lawmaker from the main opposition Democratic Party screamed loudly in front of the podium and fought with other women who tried to quiet her.​

Fights at the Yemen's parliament due of determining of marriage age of minors
YemenOnline.oct 28,2010- Debate was intensified between the MPs of ruling party GPC and opposition Islamist Islah party in the House of Representatives last Wednesday because of determining of marriage age of minors in Yemen . MPs of GPC demanded to vote on the new law that Which sets the marriage age from 18 years old while the Islamists MPs rejected that on the grounds of its contrary to Islamic dispensation. Sultan Al-Barakni,head of MPs group of GPC stressed that his party has the majority and they approved to determine minors marriage age.

We decided to vote in favor of law' Al-Barakini declared. Two of Islamists MPs attempted to attack Al-Barakini using their hands and sticks .
