THE RATE of unlawful activities, including theft, prostitution, drunkenness, in university hostels, has soared to the extent it threatens academic performances, The Express can reveal.
The recently investigation carried out by The Express’s reporter in Mabibo and Dar es Salaam University of Education hostels, has noticed students are becoming uncontrolled and unlawful beyond reason.
Speaking to The Express recently, a student, living in Mabibo hostel who introduced himself by a single name Twarah, said that many students spend their time drinking in night clubs and hotels instead of concentrating on their studies.
He said the situation is worse at night, as those who return from bars and clubs keep up senseless shouting just to give a hard life to others who at that time are doing their revision.
“There is no solitude here, especially for students who are serious with their studies, because at night drunkards pollute the overall studying atmosphere, I can assure you about that atmosphere, they are naughty lads who keep roaming from room to room and yelling, sometimes a fight breaks out and everything gets rough,” said Twarah.
He added that during the night some lovers use a football ground to have romances instead of studying.
“The situation is more like a mobster hall than a residence of higher learning for a number of reasons, one rooms here were allocated to four students but they are now staying up to 8-10 students, and in most cases six or seven of them are heavy drinkers.”
He further explained about the odd behavior known as exile, where a student brings his lover to the hostel and asks others to stay out of the room so that he enjoys love with his partner.
“This even exposes us to AIDS, because it seems studies no longer care about the fatal disease, they care more for luxuries than their studies and this promises a black future for our education, since with little concentration it is really difficult to get excellent work,” Twarah noted sadly.
For his part, Mohamed, leader of post graduates block F at Mabibo hostel, said he ruled peacefully as most postgraduate students can control themselves, although he admitted that, some of them engage in a messy existence at the beginning of semesters when they still possess large sums of money from the Higher Education Student Loans Board.
“Here we have few troubles; there is only one man from a government office who sometimes gives us a hard time but everything is in order,” said Mohamed.
Shobo (not his real name), a third year student at Dar es Salaam University College of Education, said that the situation has become more scabrous as some girl students are opting for prostitution while trying to cope with expensive living conditions at hostels.
“This state of things stinks, and even ones with a good reputation are changing, they just can’t resist the temptations of their fellow sexually ruined students, for example, one can be told by her friend to accompany her to a certain place only to find herself in a pub where the other has got two male companions, thus eventually the self-respecting one is changed into a body-seller,” said Shobo.
He added that social disorder grows a lot when the loan from HESLB finishes:
“There is a time of depression when the student cannot afford two meals per day and can only eat once, we call this 0-0-1, and this is when you can observe a rapid transformation of behavior; thefts, prostitution, physical confrontations between people are common occurrences.”
It pained him to see highly invested in and depended on by the nation intellectuals lost in a wicked condition:
“Tanzania will not make a big deal in this science and technology age if the situation in hostels is not given a proper solution.”
When reached for comments, students’ warden and hall leaders, failed to comment on anything, they advised the reporter to ask permission from the college dean.
There have been reports of reckless behavior at university hostels, where sometime in the past a girl student from DUCE, identified as Bertha Mwarabu, got killed by a male partner for what was said to be jealousy about her relationships.

Tupunguze generalization. UDSM, DUCE kuna mitihani ambayo ukishindwa kufikia kiwango you are knocked out. Si rahisi kwamba watu wote wanafanya hivyo na bado waendelee kuwepo chuo. By the way Mabibo ni complex, mle kuna watu wa nje ya chuo wengi tu huwa wanaingia pale.

It's common for the youngsters who think freedom means doing whatever you feel like doing regardless of one's moral values. What is important here is just to keep on concertizing them so much that they can create awareness among themselves. Wasisahau malengo yalowapeleka hapo jamani. Jina la bwana litukuzwe!

kuna chuo duniani hakina watu wa aina hii??

afu boom sikuhiz inategemea una asilimia ngapi. kuna watu wanapata asilimia 40 tu, hivyo kutoa mzizi wa fitina bora azileweeeeeee ziishe ajua moja. Frustrations jamani waacheni wajiliwaze!!!!!!!
