When the the government completed the Nairobi Eastern bypass, motorists were happy knowing commute time would be reduced greatly. However, this celebration was short-lived as the same traffic jam they were trying to avoid in the city became prevalent here too.

Nairobi Northern and Eastern bypasses were constructed as two-way roads, obviously without the foresight that a few years later they would become as busy as they are today.

Now, the government is seeking to convert them into dual carriage highways.

The Northern bypass runs from Ruaka to Ruiru while the Eastern one runs from Mombasa Road through Cabanas, Pipeline, Utawala until it joins Thika Road.

The Eastern Bypass has particularly become busy owing to the fact that it provides a shorter link between Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, and a big chunk of the rest of the country. It has also produced a vibrant entertainment industry with tens of meat joints and night clubs on a relatively short stretch.

The Eastern Bypass also unexpectedly became an ‘industrial hub’ with numerous factories and go downs.

“If you look at our situation today, we have more vehicles than we should have. Since they were completed, these roads have attracted so much traffic that there now jams there most of the time. We believe making them dual carriageways will help ease the congestion on those roads but also on the CBD,” Transport Cabinet Secretary James Macharia said on the sidelines of the Belt and Road Forum in China.

This new initiative is part of the continuing plan to decongest Nairobi by redirecting traffic that doesn’t necessarily have to enter the CBD to bypasses.

Also in the works is a double-decker road on Mombasa road, and the Nairobi Western Bypass from Ruiru to Nairobi-Nakuru highway.

“These projects are at the tail end of planning and financing sourcing. Once the paperwork is completed, you will see massive construction work across the city that will dramatically change the face of the city,” Macharia added.

The CS further revealed that work on a light rail from Syokimau to JKIA will start within 6 months.

This new initiative is part of the strategy for the incumbents to remain in power.

I don't think so, Uhuru government has been on construction spree since they went into office, it could be so if they are starting today.

They have completed many projects that had earlier been elusive to former governments

clearly as of now, Kenyans want delivery not just empty promises, and since the new promulgated constitution made it possible for wanjiku to act as the bosses literally, starting right from their county leaders they can chuck them out freely if they feel they are not representing as should be.
my own view on devolutuion is that it actually works, however young it is (6 years)

Very true, in fact people expected more bottlenecks but as it stands, it has been a real success. Kenyans are rough, they are pulling leaders exactly to the point they want. Right now if a leader cant deliver, he goes home. Have you seen it in the preliminaries??

many sitting leaders did not make it through man... No matter how rich/popular or how long they've been in power

Nenda Wajir nk.

So thank you

Yeah! Incumbents gets voted for by pulling such initiatives, unlike in Tanzania where some people meet in Dodoma to endorse a president. In Kenya, being in power is a very hot seat, a president has to crisscross the country and the globe pulling deals all over, but in Bongo as long as CCM have your back, you better as well sleep all day you will still be the president.

One belt, one road forum Tanzania tumeingia mkataba mnono kama inavyosomeka.

I think you should create a thread for that instead, 1st off it has nothing to do about kenyan news and absolutely nothing to do with the bypass projects
For your information that bypass project is the result of the same forum in which Tanzania got this deal,

one road, one belt, Chinese program for infrastructural development in Africa is the one which will fund your bypass though not only Kenya but cement which will be used in different areas of construction in Africa will be shipped from that factory which will be built in Tanga Tanzania.
