Govt says it needs time to reclaim its houses

The government is already working on a plan to take back state-owned houses which were sold illegally, the Deputy Infrastructure Development Minister, Dr. Makongoro Mahanga, has told The Guardian.

``This is a process. We need time to implement this sensitive government undertaking in line with National Assembly recommendations,`` Makongoro said in an exclusive interview.

The decision to sell government residential quarters, according to Vunjo Member of Parliament Aloyce Kimaro (CCM)who tabled a private motion calling on the government to restore its ownership of the housessignified that leaders who made the decision needed to possess the houses they were living in.

He added that the rest of civil servants who bought the rest of the government quarters simply served as smokescreens.

Parliament endorsed Kimaros motion and resolved that the government should immediately repossess houses which were sold illegally, especially those located in administrative zones.

Due to the fact that more than half of the of the sales proceeds was still in the hands of buyers, the House resolved that the money should be paid at once, otherwise the contracts of sale would be revoked or the ownership of the houses revert to the government.

When contacted by The Guardian early this week, the deputy minister for infrastructure development said: ``We need time to implement the resolution and report back to the National Assembly.``

MP Aloyce Kimaro had stated in his motion that many civil servants were currently living in hotels for lack of accommodation.

``Governments all over the world have set aside areas where leaders starting with the President, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Judges, Police officers and other heads of security agencies live,`` he said.

He added that the move to repossess the formerly state owned houses be implemented because even President Jakaya Kikwete had said that all houses located in sensitive areas should be taken back.

Hivi, mbona walipokuwa wanaamua kujigawia hizo nyumba hawakusema wanahitaji muda zaidi wa kutafakari zoezi zima? Sasa yanawatokea puani ndio wanasema wanahitaji muda zaidi? Wa kufanya nini?

Selective repossession of houses on the pretendency that they are situated on sensitive areas, will create another room for bribery and corruption. Let ALL houses be repossessed, period.

Tusikaribishe rushwa.
Hizi nyumba ni za wananchi wote na walipokiuzia hawakutuomba ruhusu sisi wenye mali. Warudishe - siyo warudishe bali serikali ichukue tena nyumba zake.
