Several people were injured after a man wielding an axe attacked commuters at the main railway station in Dusseldorf.

German police said a man had been arrested after the incident on Thursday at 9pm.

A police spokesman said more suspected attackers could be at large.

Around five people were injured, one seriously, but the victim's condition is not life-threatening.

The spokesman said it was too early to say whether the incident was a terror attack. He said: "We are not using the words 'rampage' or 'terror'."

He added there was no serious threat of further attacks but the station remained closed as police carried out a search.

All train services to and from the station were suspended.

Germany has been on a heightened terror alert after a hijacked lorry ploughed into a Christmas market in Berlin killing 12 people last year. Islamic State claimed responsibility.

According to German security services, there are about 10,000 radical Islamists in the country with 1,600 suspected of having links to terror groups.
