Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga visit to US critical, precedes Obama's to Africa

On Tuesday, June 18, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will address scholars and international policy enthusiasts in Washington, DC at an event organised by the Woodrow Wilson Centre. This visit confirms Raila's declaration that losing the presidential race opened a window of opportunity for him to engage at a different level on behalf of Kenyans.

The former Prime Minister is slated to discuss the past 50 years, highlighting achievements and challenges on the African continent. He will also share his vision for Africa over the next 50 years, with a particular focus on Africa's future engagements with China and
US.

Odinga's visit to Washington, DC is critical for various reasons:

First, it comes at a time when the African Union has taken a hardline stance against the International Criminal Court and by extension the West.

Secondly, Odinga's trip is critical because it comes just days before US President Barack Obama visits South Africa, Senegal and Kenya's neighbor to the South, Tanzania. Whether Odinga will be feted by the White House remains unclear but if that happens, then it would have some serious implications on the US-Kenya relations. If Odinga visits the White House or holds meetings with top administration officials then Washington will be sending a clear message that Odinga's opinion is still very relevant in Washington and the West as a whole.

Third, Odinga's lecture resonates with recent US positions. According to the US Deputy National Security Advisor Ben Rhodes, Obama's trip to Africa is very important to America. Rhodes states: "You've got some of the fastest growing economies in Africa. You've got a massively growing youth population. You've got key security and counterterrorism issues that we work on with African countries" adding that if President Obama "overlooks" the continent, the US would be "ceding" leadership.

Considering the importance the
US attaches to this trip and the fact that Obama has "snubbed" Kenya for a second time, it will be interesting to hear what Odinga has to say on Africa- US relations.

Fourth, barely three weeks ago, US Secretary of State John Kerry attended the 50th anniversary of the African Union in Ethiopia and noted that six of the world's fastest growing economies are in Africa and that Africa's opportunities call for "vigilance" by all. That Odinga is expected to highlight Africa's engagement with China and the US over the next 50 years cannot be ignored. He has a rare chance to turn Kerry's and Rhodes' words into an advantage for Kenya and Africa by emphasising true partnerships mutually beneficial.

Finally, whether or not Odinga is treated like an African statesman and chaperoned by the Kenya embassy in Washington or left to figure his way around is beside the point. The Woodrow Wilson Center is one of the most influential international policy think tanks in Washington, DC. Odinga's invitation to DC just before Obama's trip to Africa is a clear indication that he still has a lot of thump internationally, particularly in the West. It is this kind of clout that will solidify Raila's legacy and create opportunities for Kenya if properly exploited.

Basi hapo team Jubilee lazima wamwonee kijicho na akirudi Kenya anaweza akapewa usumbufu sumbufu tena uwanja wa ndege.

Yaani hii serikali ya Uhuruto bana.

Sounds noble. Politics aside, government could use him to build bridges between Nairobi and Washington and mend the somewhat "strained" relations between the two countries. What is more, Raila could be made busy in this role for Kenya so that he has little time to "interfere" with politics locally. A win win sort of situation.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is expected to address policy makers in Washington as part of the Woodrow Wilson International Centre's Africa Programme tomorrow.

The former Premier is expected to address a number of issues among them the achievements and challenges of the African continent over the last 50 years.

"The former Prime Minister of the Republic Kenya, The Honourable Raila A. Odinga, will discuss the past 50 years, highlighting both achievements and challenges on the continent," a post on the Woodrow Wilson International Centre website reads.

Odinga is also expected to give his vision for the next 50 years particularly pertaining to Africa's relationship with China and the United States.

"He will also share his vision for Africa over the next 50 years, with a particular focus on Africa's future engagements with China and the United States," the Wilson Centre post continues.

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga is scheduled to hold talks in Washington on Tuesday with the second-highest-ranking State Department official, Kenya's US Ambassador Elkanah Odembo has confirmed.

The meeting with Deputy Secretary of State William Burns signifies the Obama administration's appreciation for Mr Odinga's role in helping ensure a peaceful outcome of the March presidential election. Read (

The Burns - Odinga session will also send a message of US willingness to engage with prominent Kenyan politicians who have not been charged with crimes by the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Secretary of State John Kerry, who will be out of town on Tuesday, asked Deputy Secretary Burns to meet with Mr Odinga, Ambassador Odembo said.

To underscore the Obama administration's respect for Mr Odinga's role in Kenya, the former prime minister is scheduled to attend a dinner on Tuesday evening hosted by Donald Yamamoto, the acting head of the State Department's Africa Bureau.

Mr Odinga has also been invited to take part in a roundtable discussion on Tuesday organised by a grouping of US corporate executives with investment interests in Africa, Ambassador Odembo added.

The Orange Democratic Movement leader's busy day also includes a presentation at the Woodrow Wilson International Centre for Scholars.

Mr Odinga is to speak on the achievements and challenges Africa has faced in the 50 years since Kenya achieved independence.

He is also expected to visit the Library of Congress, which holds a large collection of historical documents from Kenya, Ambassador Odembo said.

On Monday, Mr Odinga is set to meet with the mayor of Philadelphia, the East Coast city where Mr Odinga and his wife, Ida Odinga, attended the university graduation of their daughter, Winnie, on Saturday.

She studied at Drexel University, where she read political science.

Mr Odinga is also scheduled to tour the National Constitution Centre in Philadelphia, the site of the US Constitutional Convention in 1787.

I heard the same kinda statements about bringing ICC cases home..turns out that this man is fully drunk with publicity and his mediatorial eye could currently salvage the situation in war torn congo. every one in the world knows Raila is a central contact to OBAMA, lookd good for his memoirs but not helpful to the common mwananchi

I am not consumed by hatred. kwasababu i have the courage to tackle issues even when things do not make sense. But for you chuki yako inaweza kamatwa mpaka kwa mikono.

Waulize hata Ab-titchaz wananijua. I have been known to penetrate and unsettle one's intuition! mimi nimevuka mpaka wa kuyaona siasa kwa lenses za uchapisho wa maghazeti. tumevuka pia mpaka wa kujisumbua kuzungumza empty and pompous words. Amini Raila kashindwa, there will be no more of him, pengine young turks wa CORD ndio wakati wao kuchukua usukani (kama cord will be existent in the next general election).

yaonekana bado umepotea. raila has lost..get out of your catacombs bana upate kuiona jua..kumekucha!
