Five killed as rains ravage Morogoro, Ruvuma regions

At least 20 killed in Kenya and 30,000 in need of relief aid

Five people died and many others were seriously injured in separate incidents associated with ongoing rainfall in Morogoro and Ruvuma regions, including four who were killed by lightning.
In Morogoro District, two people died at Kisaki area, Mvuha division while in Songea district lightning killed a motorcycle driver and his passenger at Majengo area and another in Namtumbo District.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander Thobias Andengenye said yesterday that on January 7, this year around 2pm, Mwanaidi Ubeho (30) was killed by lightning while collecting mangoes.
On the same day Seleman Rashid (25) a resident of Milengwelengwe village in Morogoro district died after being hit by lightning while fetching water from a well.
Andengenye said that a 22-years-old girl, Grace Milanzi, a resident of Chanzulu- Kimamba ward died immediately after falling into deep water well. He said that Grace was found dead by Romanus Maruyi (44) who went to fetch water from the same well.
The RPC called on residents to be careful during the current rain season and avoid sitting under trees when it rains.
Meanwhile, Ruvuma Regional Police Commander Michael Kamuhanda named the deceased as Sakina Mbiliko (30), a resident of Namtumbo district, Seleman Ally (30), a resident of Matarawe village in Songea district and Flora Peter (2, a resident of Majengo, Songea district.
Kamuhanda said the first incident occurred on Wednesday evening in Songea district when Seleman Ally who is also a motorbike driver took shelter from the rains under a tree.
He said that in Namtumbo district, Sakina Mbiliko died on Wednesday night after she was hit by a lightning while sleeping inside her house.
The Songea District hospital Chief Medical Officer, Dr Peter Kiula said the hospital had admitted scores of people injured by lightning.
Last week, flash floods left two students of the Arusha-based Tengeru Livestock Training Institute dead and over 400 people homeless in Shinyanga Region.
The students were swept away by flood waters following heavy rains as they tried to cross a river.
The floods also left a number of people dead and wreaked havoc on houses and infrastructures in Kilosa district, Morogoro Region.
Reports from the district said 813 houses were destroyed and 4,819 others were surrounded by flood water, leaving thousands of people without shelter.
Most of the flood victims are putting up in makeshift structures in different parts of the district. The number of people who have been left homeless has increased to 9,000.
It was reported that communication between the headquarters of Dodoma Region's Mpwapwa district and its 12 wards was cut off last Sunday after floods swept away the Kinyasungwa River Bridge in Gulwe village.
The situation brought social and economic activities to a halt, worsening the plight of the residents of the area.
