It is reported that, more than a half of Kenyan females most of them above 20years, are circumcised. However, it is said that, there are still many practices done to girs of below 20s, and the percentage is 30% of girls in Kenya are circumcised. hii inatisha, everywhere you walk around Nairobi, ukichukua demu yeyote, unakuta ametahiriwa. Inasemekana kuwa, Uganda na Tanzania pia kuwa matatizo kama hayo lakini Kenya, ni more than 50% of the population of women are circumcised. zaidi sana, watu ambao ni above 50s ni karibia wote.

this is said to cause a lot of problems wakati wa kujifungua, kwasababu, badala ya mwanamke kuchanika kwenda chini, wao huchanika kwenda juu kwenye lile kovu, matokeo yake wengu hupata fistula kwasababu wakati wmingine huathiri hadi kwenye kibofu cha mkojo(urine blader). Jamani, tatizo hili solution yake ni nini hapa East africa?

Hivi wanakataga kinini vile? Nimejaribu kufikiria sipati jibu, sijawahi kutembea na demu aliyetahiriwa. Hata kama nimewahi basi sikujua!! Au wanakata kile watu wanaitaga kiharage?

50%, I doubt if that is true, it cant be. Please what is the source of your informatiom. I doubt it because the communities that practice it are very few and are minorities like the kuria and maasai. The luo, kikuyu, luhya, kamba, dont practise it and this populatiom is way above 70%

DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (PANA) - The eradication of female genital mutilation is facing new barriers in Tanzania as communities carrying out the practice go underground for fear of prosecution, activists say.

This was because of the Sexual Offences Act 1998, which makes it an offence to carry on the practice on females below 18 years.

"It is true that the practice is escalating despite of concerted efforts to curb it," the executive director of the Legal Human Rights Centre, Helen Kijo-Bisimba, told PANA.

Kijo-Bisimba, whose non-governmental organisation has conducted extensive surveys on the practice, was speaking in an interview.

She said research findings revealed that with the new law in force, the practice, which mainly involves the removal of the clitoris, was now being conducted secretly.

According to a 1999 Demographic and Human Survey, 67.9 percent of all women in Dodoma and 25.4 percent of all women in Singida were circumcised in 1996.

In Morogoro, 20.2 percent faced the razor, in Iringa 27 percent, in Mara 43.7 percent and in Mtwara 2.9 percent, she said.

She added that at least 85 percent of all females living in the rural areas had their clitorises removed in observance of the age-old custom.

The practice was found to be deeply ingrained among the Maasai of the northern region of Arusha where all women interviewed during the survey had undergone the ritual, she said.

"This is because the practice is strongly supported by the elders and young people who fear non-acceptance in their community of family and peers," she added.

While it is also kept alive because of the lack of education in many girl children, culture and social identity are the most cited reasons for the continued practice today.

The Maasai consider the tradition an important heritage that must be perpetuated in order to be acceptable among their ancestral spirits after death, Kijo-Bisimba said.

"The same view is shared with the Chagga ethnic group as well," she added.

The government called the practice despicable. Apart from passing the Sexual Offences Act, which has also come under criticism, the state has done little to stop the practice.

wewe, Tanzania we are very mixed up, makabila yetu yameoana sana, na huwezi shangaa ukiona mchaga kazaliwa songea au mhehe kazaliwa mara na Tanga. kitu kama hicho kwa tz ni asilimia ndogo sana amini usiamini, however, we should speak kwa ajili ya kusaidia sio ushabiki tu.wamasai ndo tz wanafanya sana hayo na wakuria. wachagga wameacha wote, wagogo bado wanafanya na watu wa tanga baadhi. ila mikoa kama iringa, hata wanaume wenyewe hawatahiri, sijui kutahiri wanawake wangesikia wapi sasa hapo...hahaha, nyanda za juu kusini kama iringa, mbeya, rukwa songea nk hata wanaume wenyewe hawatahiri...hahaha. lakini kwa kenya, tunatakiwa tuwaombee hawa watu, kwasababu ukifika Nairobi, huwezi shangaa ukisikia mkenya akisema watz ni watam kwasababu wanawake wao wote kule kenya wamepitishwa wembe. wakenya wachache sana wanawezakuolewa na mtz, kwasababu wamepungua ladha. si unajua tena.

Duh! Lakini si ndiyo wana elimu zaidi?

wanaelimu zaidi ya nani mzee, wanaelimu zaidi yako tu labda. wakenya hawana lolote, tusiseme wana elimu kuzidi watz. elimu gani butu ile mtu akifika form four anaingia university? kwa wale waliosoma university of Dar es salaam au university yoyote ile tz, mtaona kuwa hapa tz wanafunzi wengi wakutoka nje ni waganda, because the education system ya tz haturuhusu mtu akiwa form four kuingia university. uganda wanayo hadi form six, so is tz. so kenyans have no room here unless wengine huwa wakifika hapa wanaingia form five na six ndo wapate admission ya kuingia hapa. vile vile, msisahau kuwa university of dar es salaam is the best in East Africa. last year, ilikuwa ya 13th Africa, after 11 universities in South Africa and the 12th the university of Cairo, then we came university of Dar. they miss a lot here guy!.

Mbeba, your not being truthful with regards to female circumcision in kenya.

what is the truth? don't protect problems OK! just be open so that you can be helped. and what about your education system? have you been in Tanzania?

how are you Mnairobi, u sure of what u talking about? hahaha, your country needs salvation from this issue...lol!

Mbeba Maono,
You have some bitterness with kenyans!!!...what's your issue?...sema?!! Chuki ya nini!!
The basis of your argument is biased and flawed...

You have no facts and figures about circumcision in Kenya...Do not display your ignorance in this esteemed public forum.
For your information Not all Kenyan Women are tahiriwad.

I recommend that you talk about what you know. Many countries in African and Middle East used to circumcise their women...Now that we are in the 21st century many have abandoned this tradition.
It's not only in Kenya where women circumcised even huko TZwapo wanawake wame tahiriwa...so do not ridicule a people while your own pple are doing the same. "Remove the log in your before yuo remove in some elses eye"

What we should worry about as Africans is how to eradicate this barbaric custom because it has been overtaken by events. IT served it's purpose but not anymore.
That's my take on it.

Ujasiri ulianzia kwenye TOHARA. Makabila yote yanayo TAHIRI wanaume na wanawake ni JASIRI sana.

wanaelimu zaidi ya nani mzee, wanaelimu zaidi yako tu labda. wakenya hawana lolote, tusiseme wana elimu kuzidi watz. elimu gani butu ile mtu akifika form four anaingia university? kwa wale waliosoma university of Dar es salaam au university yoyote ile tz, mtaona kuwa hapa tz wanafunzi wengi wakutoka nje ni waganda, because the education system ya tz haturuhusu mtu akiwa form four kuingia university. uganda wanayo hadi form six, so is tz. so kenyans have no room here unless wengine huwa wakifika hapa wanaingia form five na six ndo wapate admission ya kuingia hapa. vile vile, msisahau kuwa university of dar es salaam is the best in East Africa. last year, ilikuwa ya 13th Africa, after 11 universities in South Africa and the 12th the university of Cairo, then we came university of Dar. they miss a lot here guy!.

Unaonekana mtu wa kujadili ishuz kwa chuki bila point.kwani ni vita?Ebo!

the bottom line is; both countries have this problem to some extent...so the important question is - what is being done or what can be done to stop it?

We need to stop that bse niliskia reason behind ni kumpunguzia mwanamke hamu ya kutembea nje na mbaya zaidi sehemu waipunguzayo ie kiharage ndo sehemu inayomletea msisimko demu wakati wa majambozi.
Ebu tuache izo mila kama kweli wanataabika kiasi icho
