This will tie in very well with the commuter rail system, i was in mwiki today and GOK has kept its word by building new train stations. Now we await the upgrade of the line which will have trains travelling at 60- 80 kph around nairobi. Together with this we will have leapfrogged several african countries in mass transport.Actually 20 new train stations are under construction in Nairobi in preparation for the trains under phase 1. Then the line will be extended to areas like Ruai in phase 2.
 
The plan is to move at least 132,000 passengers daily on the railway line, up from the current 11,000. In March last year, the World Bank approved Kenya Railway’s (KR) Nairobi Commuter Rail(NCR) master procurement plan, which is intended to “guide the process of establishing mass rail transport with intermodal facilities in Nairobi metropolitan region.”
It is hoped that NCR will attract a substantial portion of the 1.5 million who travel into the CBD every day. This includes the middle class who have shunned the railway services due to overcrowding, poor facilities and lack of enough trips.
City residents are expected to start seeing the fruits of this ambitious plan when 64 buses arrive from South Africa at the end of the month to kick start the BRT project. Kenya intends to borrow heavily from Colombia’s bus rapid transit model in Bogota.
In Bogota’s TransMilenio system, commuters swipe their smart cards loaded with cash to gain entry into the bus stations and wait for buses inside the stations. The BRT project will have five interconnected lines built on already existing roads that will be named after Kenya’s big five animals; Ndovu (Elephant), Simba (Lion), Chui (Leopard), Kifaru (Rhino) and Nyati (Buffalo).
Ndovu line will serve commuters from Kangemi to Imara Daima. Simba Line will reign commuters from the Bomas Interchange near the Bomas of Kenya to Ruiru town, passing through the city.
Chui Line commuters will ride one swift bus from Njiru area in Embakasi to Jamhuri Showground.
Kifaru Line will ferry commuters from Eastlands. The line will run from Mama Lucy Hospital to T-Mall via the CBD. Nyati Line, the shortest of the five, will connect Balozi Estate near GSU headquarters to Imara Daima using Outer Ring Road.
The decision to build the BRT on already existing roads instead of coming up with completely new roads is informed by advice from JICA, which said it would be difficult to get land for new roads and this will delay the project.
 
Also NLC (National land commision) has finished acquiring land for expansion of eastern and northern bypass to be the same standard as southern bypass. Kangundo road expansion is already underway to make it a dual carriage highway, trucks and earth movers already on site. This will open up machakos county (The bedroom for a lot of the middle class working in nairobi county), Kiambu County (The play ground of the rich owning businesses in Nairobi County). I General the surrounding counties will open up more giving people more options for living outside Nairobi.

Huo ni mkopo tu, sisi tunajenga SGR kutokana na internal revenue zetu, China walikubali kutupa mkopo ila tulisema wasubiri hadi tutakaposhindwa, ninyi ni aibu, eti China ilipokataa kuwapa mkopo baada ya kugundua mtashindwa kurudisha, mumeshindwa kumalizia mnaamua kuitelekeza porini.
 
That is a driver's door, the other side of the bus has 3 passenger's doors.
The bus stations are built to facilitate people with different needs. i.e A passenger with wheel chair or a blind person can enter and exit the bus freely, no steps on the door.

That said, you should build dedicated special infrastructures for the buses to operate well.

Janerose........one BRT bus inareplace 6-14 seater matatu...1- 14 seater matatu ina employ dereva moja na tout moja...bus moja ya BRT ina employ dereva mmoja tu....kwa hivo bus moja ya BRT inafuta vijana 11 kazi....vijana walikuwa kazi hawapo kazi tena,unafikiri wataenda wapi....shida yetu waafrika tunakimbilia projects hazimake economic sense......our economies are still tiny and largely agricultural.....our infrastructure growth should centre around agriculture for maximum impact....i.e in makueni county hapa kenya niliona gavana wa huko alishajenga kiwanda ya kuprocess juice...kumbuka huko wanakuza maembe mingi sana...kisha akatafuta market....saa hii vijana huko wakapata ajira,mkulima wa maembe akapata market,hizo juice lazima zipelekwe market,hapo dereva ashapata kazi,vijana wa ku offload lazima wapate kazi...kwa ufupi hio investment ya kiwanda ipo na ripple effects na watu wengi wakanufaika....economic development is organic,thats how you grow an economy...sikufanya projects hazisaidii watu.
BRT haiendeshwi na dereva mmoja wanashift ,kama wanaanza alfajiri kabisa anatoka kazini saa nane mchana anapokea mwingine hadi jioni...bus moja linatakiwa liwe na dereva watatu na wana off days

Pesa ya kujenga BRT siyo kidogo ila pesa ya kuchora BRT ndiyo kidogo. Hivi mnajua barabara ya BRT nitofauti na lami za kawaida! Life span yake ni miaka zaidi ya 50, inawekwa heavy concrete. Hiyo Thika road life span yake ni 15 to 20 years. Wakenya hamjui chochote kuhusu BRT mna bwabwaja tu, karibuni Dar mjifunze. Mnajifanya mnaiga ya Bogota baada ya kuja Dar na kuona ya Dar ni maji marefu.
