The Energy and Water Utility Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has slashed the proposal by Tanzania Electric Supply Company (Tanesco) to hike electricity tariffs from 34.6 per cent to only 18.5 per cent. The new tariff will take effect from January 1, 2011.
Tanesco had requested Ewura to increase the tariff from 34.6 per cent in 2011; 13.8 per cent in 2012 and 13.9 per cent in 2013, which the regulatory has refused.
After a meeting with the Tanesco board of directors, it was decided that a wide electricity tariff adjustment system, to cover three years from January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013, should be deferred until when a credible cost of service study is carried out by an independent expert to be engaged by us, EWURA Director General Haruna Masebu told a news conference in Dar es Salaam on Monday.
He also cited several conditions for the approved tariffs, including one ordering TANESCO to submit to Ewura a detailed report of technical and non-technical loses within one year.
Furthermore, Ewura has abolished a special rate for the utility companys staff, whereby they will now be subjected to tariffs as other general use customers.
According to TANESCO, the requested tariffs will enable to demonstrate its bankability to donors, increase capacity needed to meet system peak demand and to adequately fund repair and maintenance programme to ensure a stable supply of electricity.
