NAIROBI, Kenya Nov 16 – Ethiopia’s Deputy Prime Minister Demeke Mekonnen was due in Kenya on Monday to brief President Uhuru Kenyatta on the law enforcement operation in the northern Tigray region.

Diplomatic sources told Capital FM News that Mekonnen has been dispatched by Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to also seek support from Kenya.

“The Deputy Prime Minister is arriving today,” a source said, “he will hold talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta and brief him about the law enforcement in northern Tigray region as well as solicit for support.”

The Ethiopian government has been carrying out the law enforcement operation in northern Tigray region to restore rule of law and has made it clear that there will be no negotiations with the militia group, until law and order is restored.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced on November 4 that he had ordered military operations in Tigray in a dramatic escalation of a long-running feud with the region’s ruling party, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).

My take

The Ethiopian govt knows how important it is to get kenya's support because we are in the UN Security Council.

Ethiopians were in the council not too long ago so they know first hand how important it is.

Also Uhuru has a positive reputation with most of the G20 and regional leaders which means his word might hold a little bit more weight than usual

Huyu jamaa majuzi si alikuwa kwa Museveni, baada ya maongezi yao ndio Museveni akutuma ile tweet, kwenda Kenya sasa imekuwa nongwa, mnataka kuonekana kama vile kuna kitu maalum wakati jamaa wanafuata majirani zao wote.

Kenya imekua baba lao ukanda huu, leteni issue zenu tutawaskliza, hata kusini ambao hujiita "jitu lililolala/sleeping giant" limewanyanyasa viongozi wake hadi wameomba hifadhi huku.

CAIRO – 18 November 2020: Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker and Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Areas Assem al-Gazar joined on Wednesday Tanzanian Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa in celebrating the completion of the construction of the dam on Rufigi River.

The dam is part of Julius Nyerere Hydropower Station planned to have a capacity of 2,115 megawatts and produce 6,307 GWh per annum. The capacity of the dam's reservoir is 34 billion cubic meters.

The ministers are accompanied by the deputy minister of foreign affairs, representatives of the Egyptian Armed Forces' Engineering Authority, and the coalition of Egyptian firms that are carrying out the project. Those are Elsewedi Electric and the Arab Contractors. That is in addition to officials from a number of Egyptian Banks.

The representatives of the firms clarified the executive status of the project whose contract – worth $2.9 billion – was signed in 2018 by the prime ministers of both countries

The dam will secure the electricity needs of 17 million Tanzanian families, inhibit floods, provide water for irrigation, and preserve wild life and forests.
