A primary school teacher from one of the schools within the Manzini region was arrested after allegedly giving abortion pills to his 19-year- old girlfriend.

The incident of the accused teacher and his school-going girlfriend, who was doing Form Five in one of the schools within the same region, occurred whilst the girl was still at school.

They were both arrested and charged with abortion. Information gathered is that the pupil fell pregnant sometime in 2018 and upon realising she informed her lover teacher, who then came up with a plan to abort the unborn baby. It was gathered that sometime in July last year, the pupil went to visit the accused teacher at his house at the primary school teacher’s quarters.

It is alleged that after the pupil got pregnant, the teacher gave five abortion tablets to the pupil, who drank two of the tablets and then inserted the other three into her private parts.

This is alleged to have happened at around lunch time on a Sunday. Information gathered is that after ingesting the tablets, the pupil started bleeding and felt dizzy. It is alleged that at around 20:00 hours, the mission was accomplished when the pregnancy got aborted.

The pupil was then taken to Raleigh Fitkin Memorial Hospital, where she received treatment. The couple made their court appearance yesterday at the Manzini Magistrates Court.

They appeared before Magistrate Nelsiwe Hlophe where they were represented by lawyer Philani Khumalo.

The Crown paraded a witness who is a doctor who explained about abortion. The case couldn’t proceed, in court as the accused persons lawyer was later arrested for making an appearance in court while intoxicated.

The case is expected back in court on January 22 pending resetting of the trial date.

During their court appearance, the accused persons made sure that they avoided the media as they did not want their pictures taken while they were inside court.
