Equotorial Guinea is a small country at the west coast of Central Africa. Despite a per capita GDP (PPP) of more than US$30,000 [1] (CIA Factbook $50,200[2]) which is as of 2006 the fourth highest in the world, Equatorial Guinea ranks 121st out of 177 countries on the United Nations Human Development Index.

In July 2004, the US Senate published an investigation into Riggs Bank, a Washington-based bank into which most of Equatorial Guinea's oil revenues were paid until recently, and which also banked for Chile's Augusto Pinochet. The Senate report, as to Equatorial Guinea, showed that at least $35 million were siphoned off by Obiang, his family and senior officials of his regime. The president has denied any wrongdoing. While Riggs Bank in February 2005 paid $9 million as restitution for its banking for Chile's Augusto Pinochet, no restitution was made with regard to Equatorial Guinea, as reported in detail in an Anti-Money Laundering Report from Inner City Press.[15]

Mkuu,

GDP per capita is a poor indicator of development because it is an average and may not reflect income distribution. In such economies as that of Equetorial Guinea it is not unheard of for one man, usually the president, or the president and his henchmen to have 99 of the GDP.

For example, if the president has 1.45 billion of the total 1.5 billion then the rest of the population will divide 50 million. If you remove one person, the president, from the equation this will give a more reflective GDP per capita of 100 $.

Unaona sasa....Ndivyo Tulivyo!!

Nimekupata nyani,

Lakini inaelekea elites wa nchii hii wamejisahau, na Angola is one of the most corrupt country in the World.

Hivi ni nini kilamfanya Sir Seretse Khama to do what he did for Botswana. Was he an angel? NO! Sasa whats stopping our kikwete dearest to do the same?? Kikwete is sitting on a legacy that can go one way or the other!!

Embu tuone Botswana!!

"At the time of its independence, Botswana was among the world's poorest countries. Tax revenues proved insufficient to cover the costs of government, forcing Botswana into heavy debt with Britain. The foreign policy situation was similarly bleak; trapped between the aggressive white minority governments of apartheid South Africa and Rhodesia, most observers believed that Botswana would have little choice but to become a satellite state to one or the other.[citation needed]

Khama set out on a vigorous economic program intended to transform Botswana into an export-based economy, built around beef, copper, and diamonds. The 1967 discovery of Orapa's enormous diamond deposits particularly aided this program, and between 1966 and 1980 Botswana had the fastest growing economy in the world. Much of this money was reinvested into infrastructure, health, and education costs, resulting in further economic development. Khama also instituted strong measures against corruption, the bane of so many other newly-independent African nations." (from wikipedia)

Botswana has diamonds
Tanzania has diamonds (not as much) but we have a lot of gold, uranium, Tanzanite..and abundance of land for grazing and agriculture..plus we have a coast , game parks etc etc

Sometime inauma kweli..Equitorial New Guinea, Nigeria to me are failed african states!!...controlled by the greedy..It seems Tanzania is following their moves than the moves of botswana!!

:-(

I will give Sir Khama credit for being democratic and not embracing nepotism, but other than that the situation was not that much different. The Bushmen did not enjoy the upswing of Botswana's economy, one has to look at the somewhat exaggerated but model conditions in "The Gods Must Be Crazy" to see what conditions in rural Botswana were like.Up to now a large portion of Botswanas population is still illiterate, for a population that just reached 1 million (The entire population of Botswana is less than that of Dar) if Sir Khama was really commited to do wonders he had a good chance of doing it.

I guess the African leaders are of the opinion that if these poor subsistent peasants could exist under these sub human conditions for millions of years they can do so for a few more years at the profit of the ruling class.

How come you have based your entire argument with reference to bush men?? wot a cheap shot! Kosoa the economy, health and education....education is free in botswana from primary to phd..wats stopping the bush men from acting??
