The government is planning to introduce English as a medium of instruction from standard three in three years, aiming to raise the confidence of Tanzania job seekers in the East African common market.

Speaking on Wednesday at the Tanzania Education Authority (TEA), the Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa said that poor background on the English language make Tanzanians fear the east Africa job market.

“Tanzanian education is not inferior as people think, for instance University of Dar es Salaam is the best in East Africa… the problem we face is poor background in English language, we are going to make sure that in three years English will be the medium of instruction from standard three,” said Dr. Kawambwa.

Dr. Kawambwa also said immediate effort is needed to improve Information and Communication technologies (ICT) in Tanzanian schools so as to have a Tanzanian who is well educated, knowledgeable, skilled, and culturally mature to handle national and international challenges in various fields.

Presenting a report to the minister, the Chairperson of TEA, Dr Naomi Katunzi said Tanzania is still challenged with the role of providing equitable quality education to all.

“The major challenge is to explore sufficient resources for improvement of quality, equity and access, the government through the ministry of education, stakeholders and other sponsors should add more effort in financing the Education fund with the aim of facilitating quality in education,” said Dr. Katunzi.

Personally I strongly support the idea! Plse make it as u have said.

In my opinion this is a very good decision, but they should try to do it a little bit early.

This is the good movement toward sustainablity of our education.BUT FEW MONTHS AGO I HEARD THEY WERE SAYING THEY WANNA MAKE SWAHILI TO BE THE MAJOR OF INSTRUCTION IN ALL PUBLIC AND PRIVATE SECTORS, WHY do they change like a chamelion?

Mmmh...I really doubt. Suala la confidence halitokani na lugha pekee....its deeper than that!

Is as if we will be preparing vijana wetu woote kuwa ma - sales men. Na pia confidence has to be within more than on the outside especially kwenye technical matters. Just think of Chinese.

  • walimu sahihi wenye sifa

To me its a bad decision kwanza ina undermine kiswahili na pili haitazaaa matunda tunayotegemea.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

WIDE VARIATIONS IN LEARNING BETWEEN DISTRICTS
Uwezo Tanzania announces the district results from its first annual learning assessment

Dar es Salaam, December 16 – More Standard 3 learners in Rombo than in Moshi Urban could do a Standard 2 level Kiswahili and numeracy test. Mbulu, Chunya and Kisarawe learners out-performed Kinondoni and Muleba in all three tests (including English).

These are some of the stark variations in performance between districts as highlighted in Uwezo Tanzania's district report from its first learning assessment which is to released Tuesday December 14 in Dar es Salaam. The differences within districts are also sobering. Fifty-one percent of learners in Kinondoni could do the Kiswahili test but only 22 percent managed the English test. In Morogoro Urban, it was 35 percent against 13 percent respectively.

The national report, released in September, revealed the grave reality that contrary to the high expectations of parents, a lot of the children heading off to school each morning are not in fact learning. The majority of Standard 3 students are unable to perform the Standard 2 level tasks of reading a story in Kiswahili and in English and solving basic multiplication problems.

Uwezo Tanzania conducted the learning assessment in May 2010 in 38 districts. Altogether, 22,800 households in 1,140 villages were assessed bringing the total number of children involved at 42,033.

The district report now shows that some districts, on closer inspection, may not be doing as well as some may have expected and more effort is required in certain subjects.
